Claims.

This invention, relates to containers and particularly to improvements therein to the end that they can be labelled not only more quickly but also in a more attractive manner.

Certain types of containers, such as those employed for packaging hard liquors, usually are labelled on the front and back face, that on the front face to identify the origin of the liquor and that on the back face to comply with certain 10 revenue requirements. Thus two labelling operations are necessary, not to mention a double press cost in printing.

In accordance with this invention I provide a single label for both faces of the container and 16 so fashion the container that the label is accurately centered as it is applied so that the container is labelled in a single operation. It is generally the broad object of the present invention to improve containers and labels to the 20 end that not only is the cost of the label and the labelling operation materially reduced but that the appearance and attractiveness of the package is enhanced.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container, while Figures 2 and 3 are respectively views showing a label being applied to the container and a 30 plan of the label;

Figure 10 is a plan view of another label.

In accordance with this invention, I provide a label 11 with a front portion 12 and a rear portion 13 connected by straps 14. Each label can be cut from a sheet so that the legends for the 40 front and back can be printed together. The straps 14 are formed by cutting an aperture 16 in the sheet. This aperture can have any desired configuration and in Figures 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10 I have illustrated a few of these. Generally the ⁴⁵ configuration of the aperture is such that it cooperates with neck IT of the bottle, when it is slipped thereover, to center the label with respect to the bottle. The opposite portions 12 and 13 are then pressed against the bottle to which they ⁵⁰ are thereafter held fast by adhesive, the labelling being completed in but one operation with the labels in exact position on the bottle.

It is a feature of my invention that each bot5S tie has a shoulder between a side 18 and neck IT (Cl. 40—4) and that said shoulder includes a portion 19 which is at a right angle, or nearly so, to the longitudinal axis of the bottle so that the straps 14 lie fiat and do not buckle. The shoulder portion 19 can be confined to the width of the strap 5 (Figures 1 and 4) or wider than the strap and can either be at an angle to each face, as in Figures 1, 2, and 4, or it can be rounded and curve into the faces, as in Figures 7 and 9.

A further feature is that by providing the con- 10 tainer and label as described, it is possible to work out many novel and very desirable design features in the container and label to the end that excitingly new container designs can be created. 15
