Adam Jekulaitis, Brooklyn, N..Y.
Application January 2, 1935, Serial No. 126 4 Claims. (Cl. 112—137)
This invention relates to attachments for sewing machines, and more particularly to attachments for use in piping and similar arts. At the present time the piping of dresses and other gar5 ments, where the piping is made without the use of a cord, is mostly done by hand. This increases the cost of production and in a great many instances more time is consumed in the piping of a garment than in the actual manufacture thereof. 10 An object of this invention is to provide a device which will enable the operator to pipe a garment or other object on a machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will produce a more uniform and 15 more satisfactory piping and which will improve the appearance of the finished garment.
A further object is to provide a device which is adaptable to every type of machine and which may be adjusted to fit machines of varying size.
2Q A still further object is to provide a device, simple of operation and economical of construction, which may be adjusted not only to fit different types of machines but to produce different sizes of piping.
With these and other objects in view it will be apparent, with reference to the following specification when read in connection with the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, that
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my device shown attached to the bed of a machine;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2—2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side view on the line 3—3 of Fig. 1; 35 Fig. 4 is a rear view on the line 4—4 of Fig. 1, with immaterial parts omitted for the purpose of clarity;
Fig. 5 is a side view showing the device prepared to receive the garment or the cloth; and 40 Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9 are illustrations of the cloth and the various steps in preparation.
I provide a plate member 11 which may be attached to the bed of the machine 12 by an ordinary thumb screw 13 through the slot 14. It will 45 be seen that the device is movable laterally by sliding the slot 14 along the thumb screw 13 and may be thus positioned. Attached to the plate is a set screw 15 which abuts the presser foot of the machine 16. By the adjustment of the screw 15 50 and the screw 13 the device may be set to fit any size or type of machine. A portion 11 of the plate 11 is depressed, and pivoted thereabove on the bar 18 is the sleeve 19 which passes over the depressed portion 17. The depressed portion 17 is 55 slightly wider than the sleeve 19 in order to al low for adjustments which will be explained later. Adjustably attached to the plate It is folder sleeve 20 which is held in place by the screws 21 through the slot 22. These screws may be loosened and the folder sleeve 20 brought forward or back- 5 ward to fit the particular machine upon which it is used. Also attached to the plate 11 is a guide member 23 which is held in place by two screws 24 through the slots 25. This guide member 23 may be moved laterally to vary the size of the 10 piping. The guide member 23 is in turn provided with a shoulder 26.
Passing through the sleeve 19 is an operating lever or arm 27. This arm may be positioned in the sleeve by the use of the thumb screw 28 15 which tightens the sleeve to hold the operating arm in place. The operating arm 27 is provided with a folder arm 29 and a seam presser 30. In the operation of the device it is first set in place upon the machine. The thumb screw 28 is then 20 loosened and the arm 27 is pulled back to the end of the slot 31. The operating arm 27 and the sleeve 19 may then be pivoted on the rod 18 and raised in order to permit insertion of the cloth into the folder sleeve. 25
In the piping of the garment or cloth a double strip 32 is first stitched to the cloth 33 through the seam 34 with the raw edges of the double strip and of the cloth together, as shown in Fig. 6. The folded edges of the piping cloth 32 are then 30 folded over, as shown in Fig. 7. The piece is then inverted, as shown in Fig. 8, and is ready for insertion into the machine. The arm 29 is pulled back and raised, as shown in Fig. 5, and the cloth placed in the folder sleeve 20 with the 35 seams fiat, as shown in Fig. 8. The arm 27 is then lowered and the folder arm 29 is then pushed forward into the folder sleeve 29 with the folded edge of the cloth 35 and the raw edges 36 around the arm. The fold 37 contacts the 40 shoulder 26 of the guide member 23 and holds it in place, as shown in Fig. 2. When the operating arm 27 is pushed forward to the required distance, it is locked in place by tightening the screw 28. The seam presser 30 has a pointed 45 portion or other indication 38 to indicate to the operator where the seam should be held. The machine is then started and the cloth pulled through the folder sleeve 20 around the folder arm 29 and is stitched in place by the needle 39 50 of the machine, and the piping, as shown in Fig. 9, results.
It will be noted that the folder sleeve 20 and the folder arm 26 taper toward their forward ends. This causes the cloth to press against the 05
2,006,243 shoulder 26 of the guide member 23 and to roll tightly into place. By loosening the screws 24 and moving the guide member laterally, the size of the piping may be varied. As previously 5 stated, the depressed portion 17 is slightly wider than the sleeve 19 and the operating arm or lever 27 in its sleeve 19 is free to move laterally and thus permit the folder arm to move into proper position with relation to the guide member 23 10 and the shoulder 26 thereof. It wfll be noted that the shoulder 26 of the guide member 23 slopes from its center toward both ends. This is to allow the cloth to move smoothly through the sleeve and under the needle;
