Process for removal of intermediate hydrogen from cascaded polyolefin slurry reactors

Abstract

Multimodal polyolefin polymers may be prepared in series-connected polymerization reactors where a prior reactor is a slurry reactor employing light solvent as the slurry medium and hydrogen to limit polymer molecular weight, the polymer product from the prior reactor being substantially freed of hydrogen prior to entry into a subsequent polymerization reactor operating at low hydrogen pressure to produce a high molecular weight olefin. The economics and operating performance of such a series slurry reactor polyethylene process can be significantly improved through the use of an intermediate slurry transfer system and hydrogen removal apparatus that employs flash drums in series in conjunction with a warm recycle solvent slurry diluent.

  1. 1
Broadest claimClaim Score 30, narrow(NHIP)A process for the preparation of a polyolefin polymer, said process comprising:a) polymerizing at least one olefin monomer in the presence of hydrogen in a prior slurry reactor employing light solvent as a slurry medium to form a first polyolefin polymer of a first molecular weight;b) removing said first polyolefin polymer from said prior slurry reactor as a hydrogen-containing polymer slurry in light solvent and introducing said hydrogen-containing polymer slurry into a first flash drum;c) flashing away light solvent and hydrogen in said first flash drum to provide a polymer enriched and hydrogen-depleted first flash drum slurry;d) adding to said first flash drum slurry additional light solvent;e) introducing said first flash drum slurry into a second flash drum;f) flashing away further light solvent and further hydrogen to form a second flash drum slurry;and g) introducing said second flash drum slurry into a subsequent slurry reactor employing a low concentration of hydrogen, and recovering a polyolefin polymer therefrom, wherein the hydrogen mass flow from the second flash drum slurry is less than the fresh hydrogen mass flow feed to the second reactor by a factor of at least 10.
  2. 17
A polymer transport apparatus suitable for removing hydrogen between cascaded olefin slurry polymerization reactors, comprising:a) a plurality of flash drums, each flash drum comprising a polymer slurry inlet, a polymer slurry outlet, and a flash stream outlet, one of said plurality of flash drums being a prior flash drum whose polymer slurry outlet is in fluid communication with the polymer slurry inlet of a second of said plurality of flash drums downstream from said prior flash drum and being a subsequent flash drum;b) said prior flash drum associated with a prior flash drum solvent inlet in fluid communication with said prior flash drum or a polymer slurry outlet from said first flash drum;c) optionally, one or more first transfer pumps having a first transfer pump inlet in fluid communication with said prior flash drum polymer slurry outlet, a first transfer pump outlet in fluid communication with said polymer slurry inlet of said subsequent flash drum and with said solvent inlet such that a polymer slurry exiting from said prior flash drum is diluted, optionally heated, and transferred to said subsequent flash drum;said subsequent flash drum polymer slurry outlet fluidly communicable with a subsequent slurry polymerization reactor downstream from a prior slurry polymerization reactor;and d) optionally, a second transfer pump having a second transfer pump inlet in fluid communication with said subsequent flash drum polymer slurry outlet and second transfer pump outlet fluidly communicable with said subsequent slurry polymerization reactor.
