Abstract

Electrode active materials, preferably having an olivine structure, of the formula: AaMbXY4 wherein (a) A is one or more alkali metals, preferably Li, and 0<a<=2; (b) M is one or more metals, comprising Co and Fe, 0<b<=2; and (c) XY4 is X'O4-xY'x, X'O4-yY'2y, X''S4, or a mixture thereof, where X' is P, As, Sb, Si, Ge, V, S, or a mixture thereof; X'' is P, As, Sb, Si, Ge, V, or a mixture thereof; Y' is halogen, S, N, or a mixture thereof; 0<=x<3; and 0<y<4. Preferably 0.8<=a<=1.2, and 0.9<=b<=1. In a preferred embodiment, M further comprises one or more non-transition elements. Also provided are electrodes and batteries comprising an electrode active material of this invention.

    An electrode active material comprising a compound of the formula A a M b XY 4 wherein (a) A is selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, and mixtures thereof, and 0<a≦2;(b) M is a mixture of metals comprising Co and Fe, comprising at least one metal capable of undergoing oxidation to a higher valence state, and 0<b<2;and (c) XY 4 is selected from the group consisting of X′O 4-x Y′ x , X′O 4-y Y′ 2y , X″S 4 , and mixtures thereof, where X′ is selected from the group consisting of P, As, Sb, Si, Ge, V, S, and mixtures thereof;X″ is selected from the group consisting of P, As, Sb, Si, Ge, V and mixtures thereof;Y′ is selected from the group consisting of halogen, S, N, and mixtures thereof;0≦x≦3;and 0<y≦2;and wherein A, M, XY 4 , a, b, x, and y are selected so as to maintain electroneutrality of said compound.

    An electrode active material comprising a compound of the formula Li a Co e Fe f M 1 g M 2 h M 3 i XY 4 wherein (a) 00, and f>0;(b) M 1 is one or more transition metals, where g>0;(c) M 2 is one or more +2 oxidation state non-transition metals, where h≦0;(d) M 3 is one or more +3 oxidation state non-transition elements, where i>0;and (e) XY 4 is selected from the group consisting of X′O 4-x Y′ x ,  X′O 4-y Y′ 2y , X″S 4 , and mixtures thereof, where X′ is selected from the group consisting of P, As, Sb, Si, Ge, V, S, and mixtures thereof;X″ is selected from the group consisting of P, As, Sb, Si, Ge , V, and mixtures thereof;Y′ is selected from the group consisting of halogen, S, N, and mixtures thereof;0≦x≦3;and 0≦y≦2;and wherein (e+f+g+h+i)≦2, and M 1 , M 2 , M 3 , XY 4 , a, e, f, g, h, i, x, and y are selected so as to maintain electroneutrality of said compound.

    An electrode active material comprising a compound having an olivine structure, of the formula LiM(PO 4-x Y′ x ) wherein M is Co e M 1 g M 2 h M 3 i M 4 j , and (a) M 1 is one or more transition metals, comprising Fe;(b) M 2 is one or more +2 oxidation state non-transition metals;(c) M 3 is one or more +3 oxidation state non-transition elements, (d) M 4 is one or more +1 oxidation state non-transition metals;and (e) Y′ is selected from the group consisting of halogen, S, N, and mixtures thereof;and  each of e and g>0, each of h, i, and j≧0;(e+g+h+i+j)≦1;and 0≦x≦0.5.
