Abstract

A housing is configured for removable insertion into a reciprocable carriage of a printer. A thermal ink jet print assembly is mounted in the housing and includes a nozzle plate for forming a plurality of ink dots on a print media adjacent to the housing. A light source is mounted in the housing for illuminating the print media adjacent to the housing. A sensor is mounted in the housing for receiving light reflected from the print media and generating electrical signals representative thereof. The combination inkjet pen and optical scanner reduces the parts count, cost and complexity associated with optical document scanning by incorporating this capability into the pen of a thermal ink jet printer. It also permits the monitoring of dot position, dot size and/or spectral information in a thermal ink jet printer in order to make nozzle firing command corrections and improve print quality during printing. Methods are also disclosed for determining whether a sheet of print media is compatible with the ink of a thermal ink jet printer and for determining the incremental paper advance distance through a thermal ink jet printer to allow adjustments that will optimally nest the print swaths.

  2. 11
A method of improving print quality in a thermal ink jet printer, comprising the steps of mounting a combination pen and optical scanner head on a carriage of a printer for reciprocation along a scan axis;propelling a sheet of print media through the printer along a paper axis;printing a predetermined test pattern of dots of different ink colors onto the print media using the combination pen and optical scanner head;compiling predetermined dot position, dot size and/or spectral information by scanning the dots of the test pattern using the combination pen and optical scanner head;and correcting predetermined ink jet firing commands in accordance with preprogrammed parameters based on the compiled dot position, dot size and/or spectral information in order to improve print quality.
  3. 15
A method of scanning and printing documents in the same printer, comprising the steps of mounting a combination pen and optical scanner head on a carriage of a printer for reciprocation along a scan axis;propelling a first sheet of print media having pre-printed information through the printer along a paper axis;reciprocating the combination pen and optical scanner on the scan axis and generating a data file representing an image of the information pre-printed on the first sheet of print media;propelling a second sheet of print media through the printer along the paper axis;and reciprocating the combination pen and optical scanner head along the scan axis and printing user-designated information on the second sheet of print media with the combination pen and optical scanner head.
  4. 16
A method of determining whether a type of print media is compatible with the ink of a thermal ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:pre-printing an optically scannable media type identifier on a sheet of print media with a first printer;mounting a combination pen and optical scanner head on the carriage of a second printer for reciprocation along a scan axis;propelling the sheet of print media through the second printer along a paper axis;reciprocating the combination pen and optical scanner head along a scan axis and optically scanning the pre-printed media type identifier on the sheet of media;and determining from the optically scanned pre-printed media type identifier whether the print media is compatible with the ink of the combination pen and optical scanner.
  5. 20
A method of adjusting the incremental paper advance distance through a thermal ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:mounting a combination pen and optical scanner head on a carriage of a printer for reciprocation along a scan axis;propelling a sheet of print media through the printer along a paper axis;reciprocating the combination pen and optical scanner head along the scan axis and printing successive lines of dots spaced along the paper axis;scanning the successive lines of printed dots with the combination pen and optical scanner head;determining an incremental paper advance distance along the paper axis based on a number of predetermined micro-advances between the detection of successive lines of dots;and adjusting the incremental paper advance distance in accordance with pre-programed criterial.
  6. 22
A combination ink jet pen and optical scanner head comprising:a housing configured for removable insertion into a reciprocable carriage of a printer;a thermal ink jet print assembly mounted in the housing and including a nozzle on an exterior surface of the housing for forming a plurality of ink dots on a sheet of print media adjacent to the exterior surface;light means mounted in the housing for illuminating the print media including a light source, a light pipe for directing light from the light source, and first lens means for receiving light from the light pipe and diffusing the light onto a predetermined region of the print media;sensor means mounted in the housing for receiving light reflected from the print media and generating electrical signals representative thereof;and second lens means for gathering light reflected from the media and focusing the light onto the sensor means.
