Claim.

This invention relates to head protectors for helmets and similar head coverings and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which will efficiently 5 support a helmet to the head of the wearer against accidental displacement and will provide an effective cushion to the head capable of absorbing shocks and jars incident to striking the helmet with considerable force.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a helmet with a head protector applied there20 to and constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the connection between the cushion element and the liner of the protector.

Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating a cushioning element of the protector.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a substantially dome-shaped cushion element constructed of any material suitable for 30 the purpose and preferably of spongy rubber and is adapted to be placed upon the head of the wearer to snugly fit the head and is provided with ventilation openings 2.

A liner 3 surrounds the cushion element and 35 is constructed of any material suitable for the purpose, and has cut-out portions in which are secured elastic inserts 4 to permit the liner to have a limited give or yielding movement when the device is positioned on the head of the wear40 er. The lower edge of the liner has stitched or (Cl. 2—3) otherwise secured thereto a strip 5 which is in turn stitched or otherwise secured to the cushion element I. The fabric binding strip 6 underlies the edge of the cushion element I and forms a hem 7 to receive a tension element 8 presenting 5 to the device a beading for contact with the walls of the crown portion 9 of a helmet or similar head covering 10 so as to support the helmet upon the head protector with a minimum contact therewith. The protector when worn by a 10 person will effectively support the helmet against accidental displacement and any shocks or jars received by the helmet will be absorbed by the cushion member I and will be prevented from having effect on the head of the wearer. 15
