This invention relates to pocket knives and has particular reference to a pocket knife provided with an improved blade which, in addition to serving in its usual capacity as a cutting instru5 mentality, is so constructed as to provide means useful as a nail file.

The invention further contemplates a pocket knife provided with a blade having an elongated rectangular groove in one face thereof adjacent 10 the rear edge of the blade, the bottom of which groove is serrated so as to serve as a nail file when the blade is in closed relation, as well as in open relation, while the side edges of the groove provide guide means for directing the nail over the 15 serrated surface and as a means for engagement by the thumb nail for opening the blade.

The invention furthermore has in view a pocket knife which provides a combined knife blade and nail file which does not materially increase the 20 cost of the blade while substantially adding to the usefulness and efficiency thereof.

With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which 25 there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a side view of a knife constructed in accordance with the invention illustrating the blade in open relation.

Fig. 2 is a side view with the blade illustrated in closed relation.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, !0 indicates a handle of a pocket knife which may be of any desired form or construction and which is provided with a blade I i hinged or pivoted in the handle bolster on a pin 12 in 45 the usual manner so as to permit of the closing of the blade.

The blade 11 is provided in one face thereof, adjacent the rear edge of the blade, with an elon gated groove 13 which extends from the shank portion thereof to a point spaced a short distance from the outer end of the blade. The groove S3 is rectangular shaped in cross sectional configuration, and has its bottom surface serrated 5 or provided throughout its length with longitudinally spaced transversely extending teeth 14 so as to serve as a nail file while the opposite side edges of the groove function as guides for directing the nail over the serrations or teeth. 10

When the blade II is swung on the pin (2 to closed position with the cutting edge 15 of the blade concealed between the side plates of the handle, the grooved portion i 3 of the blade protrudes beyond the side edge of the handle and in 15 position to be used as a nail file when the blade is closed, as well as providing a means readily engageable by the thumb nail for opening the blade.

From the foregoing it is apparent that there is 20 provided a pocket knife blade which, in addition to serving in its usual capacity as a cutting instrumentality, is also useful as a nail file when the blade is in closed relation, as well as when the blade is open. 25
