PLASTIC MATERIAL DISPENSER
Franz Kart Schneider, Philadelphia, Pa;
Application September 26,1933, Serial No. 691,032 (CL 18—3.5) , showing, details of its design when completely i assembled.
Fig;. 2 represents an enlarged sectional plan view of the structure actuating the piston rod.;
Figs. 3 and '4·, represent; two. ofr.many types of 5 nozzles that may be attached; to the dispenser;
Fig. 5 represents the.dispenser in position for receiving a charge of plastic material.
Referring, to the drawing in,which like referencecharacters indicate likeparts; 1 is a cylinder in fabricated of suitable material; in whicn moves tightly the piston, 2, suitably ringed · with leather or other desirable material 3 and rigidly attached to die piston rod 4. A spring 5 .cushions the piston when it is withdrawn to,the:trigger end of the dispenser. The nozzle end of. the. cylinder 1 is threadedly engaged to the cap 6 into which can be conveniently inserted the nozzle 7, 8 or 9. The nozzles.7, 8 and,·9. are,conventional in structure anti use and are, shown, merely,to, illustrate the flexibility and the ,range of application of my dispenser.
To the trigger end of the. cylinder 1 is threadedly engaged, the perforated cap :10, Within the cap 10 is positioned a.perforated, disc 11 to. which the stock, 12..is, riveted, or otherwise, securely attached. As a .consequence. I, achieve an important function, with my dispenser in enabling the operator to rotate the stock 12 freely without disturbing the position of the nozzle 7, 8 or 9 when applied, to. a difficulty accessible, place.' .Surrounding; the piston rod 4 and:.lying- between the disc 11 and the plate 13 is the compression spring, 14 which holds the plate 13 securely against the. inner surface of the stock 12 as a ' fulcrum and permits; a,limited? rotation of the plate :13.iagainst its action about the piston rod 4 as indicated by the curved arrow. The plate :13 is preferably fabricated of hard material, is perforated to,rec.eiye.rthe;piston rod 4 and; whenactu- 40 ated by. the; trigger 15,:seizes theipiston rod 4<with a “biting in’.’: gripianditforeiblytpropelktheipiston rod.4,.forwarditoward:.thesn0zzlefcendcofcthe:dispenser. The trigger 15 is a bent lever in which one or more holes 16 and 17 can be drilled for the purpose of varying the ratio of the lever arms and of permitting greater or lesser mechanical advantage, depending upon the viscosity of the plastic material to be ejected.
To the rear surface of the stock 12 is attached the short movable link 18 which is rotatably hinged to the lever 19. A compression spring 20 holds the lever 19 firmly against the piston rod 4 and prevents any retrogressive movement of
3.Claims.
My invention relates generally to. dispensers, and: more. particularly to a dispenser, which is adaptable to the dispensing of plastic materials. ., dav4ce °f this.·general, character, it,is, de. o sir.able to. provide..a structure which is convcn?· leptly. portable, readily applicable to corners, cpeyipes and other, difficulty accessible places and is,, furthermore, flexibly adapted, to.the dispensing of materials of varying consistency and vis10, cosity.
. , *^n object, of. my, invention, generally expressed, is,rtp. provide, a device for. dispensing, plastic material. .
' A more specific object of my invention.is to pro15· vide a device for. dispensing plastic materials to places, ordinarily inaccessible to.. the. conventional dispensing. devices because of. their, rigidity^ of design, and. construction. The inconvenience of thus , applying plastic, material·, to such, places is 20 overcome by a feature of my invention in which the stock and the trigger of the device can be rotated, about its plunger and.cylinder.
A further o.oject of my invention is to provide a. dispenser in which, the stroke of the plunger ca-h- be, varied .through a wide range,. thereby not onjy controlling within wide limits the quantity of material ejected but also the pressure to be applied to the. substance to be ejected. '
An additional object of my invention is. to provide a means for the easy and quick application· of. nozzles of differently shaped cross sections in. order that the plastic material may be ejected tn forms necessary and: desirable for varying circumstances.
Still, another object of my invention is the ease and-the cleanliness with which the. dispenser can be loaded. To this, end the. dispenser applies the “suction” generated by the freely moving piston rod and-piston.
the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying; drawing forms thereof which are at present preferred bym®» since-the same have been found* in practice to give satisfactory and reliable-results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
My invention relates to several other novel features of construction and advantage appearing as hereinafter described and claimed in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the dispenser

M g ? 1,986,166 the piston rod 4. By means of the catch 21, however, the lever 19 can be securely locked to the stock 12 against the action of the spring 20 in order to facilitate movement inwardly or outwardly of the piston rod 4. The detent 22 positioned on the piston rod 4 limits the movement of the piston rod 4 into the cylinder 1. .
To the extreme end of the piston rod 4, adjacent to the stock 12, is threadedly or otherwise engaged the bell-shaped cap 23 which serves as a handle or a rest when the dispenser is in actual use. . .
The manner in which my device can be utilized becomes obvious when the operation is more fully described. In order to charge the dispenser with plastic material the nozzle 7, 8 or 9 and the cap 6 are readily detached and the cylinder 1 is pressed into the gasket 24 of resilient material surrounding the upturned perforation 25 punched into the shallow plate 26. The plate 26 rests upon the plastic material in a container (not shown). The lever 19 is locked to die stock 12 by the catch 21, the piston rod 4 is withdrawn to the end of its stroke and, by “suction , the plastic material flows into the cylinder 1 Wirh the lever 19 thus securely locked to the stock 12 the piston rod 4 can be moved freely m both directions in the cylinder 1. When the piston rod 4 is pulled out of the cylinder 1 the dispenser can be charged; when the piston rod 4 is pushed into the cylinder 1—under the conditions previously described—the dispenser can be -utilized as an ordinary squirt gun. In this procedure the dispenser can be quickly and cleanly charged. The cap 6 and the desired nozzle are then reconStito°£^Sca£m ^ terori^^er’being perforated to receive of the plastto: rnateSS. Wh the digger 15 said piston rod, and said link, lever and compresset for a desired mechanical1 advantage, applied sion spring associated and adapted as a lorce rotates « about its fulcrum 17 and brings mechanism to prevent retrogressive movement of its short arm into contact with the plate 13. said piston rod. ..:
The sharp, hard edge of .the plate 13 “bites” into “ the piston rod 4 and forcefully propels it forward carrying— --, material to be ejected through the nozzle 7, t> or 9. With continued use the piston Γθΰ 4___θ~ comes ...... ——. -. ..,,. , ; can be more securely seized by the plate 13. After the plate 13 has “bitten” into the piston rod 4 to propel it forward the plate 13 holds the rod 4 securely in a fixed position and prevents any retrogressive movement or recoil of the rod 4.
It is to be further observed that with the lever ; 19 locked to the stock 12 by means of the catch the piston 4 can move in both directions in the cylinder 1 and thereby make of my device an ordinary squirt gun.
While the construction as shown and described «0 is the preferred embodiment of my device, nevertheless the same may be modified in detail without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the annexed claims.
