1932, Serial No. 629,405 (CI. 91—44) vision in connection with spraying mechanism of conveying means of such character that a multiple point support is .provided for the sheets; and in certain of its more specific aspects, likewise contemplates the provision of recovery means, for 80 the liquid and of cleaning means for the belts.

In.the form of apparatus exemplified in Fig.

1, there is provided a spraying mechanism 10 which may be of the type which reciprocates from side to side of the. path of movement of sheets ⁸⁸thereunder and which is adapted to eject a spray downwardly on the. said path. Beneath the spraying mechanism is a conveyor means 11 comprising a plurality of belts 12 mounted on a roller 13 and a roller 14 which, may be. suitably power ?® driven. Each of the belts 12 is provided with a. supporting portion comprising a plurality of points 15, so that any liquid carried by the portions of the belts moving into active position can not be transferred to any material area on the TO bottom of the sheets carried thereby. At about the centre of the inactive run of the belts, there is provided an idler roll 16, whereby the belts are held m a cleaning bath 17 for a portion of their run. In order to clean the belts with particular 8® effectiveness, there is provided in the present instance a flui^-ejecting means 18 whereby a spray of fluid which may be either gaseous or liquid, but which is preferably a liquid, such as water’ is ejected upon each of the belts. In order to ⁸⁸catch the liquid sprayed, there is provided a baffle means, which in the present instance is provided by the surface of the roller 13, and a receiving trough, which in the present instance is provided by a portion of a container 20 for 8® the bath 17. Beneath that portion of the active run of the belts 12 toward which the spray is· directed by the spraying mechanism 10, there is provided a recovery catch basin 21 which, as will be noted, (Fig. 2) extends out on either side beyond the outermost belts 12. From the catch basm 21, a return pipe 22 leads to a reservoir which may be suitably connected with the spraying mechanism 10.

In the exemplified construction, there is pro- 100 vided a delivery conveyor 23, whereby the sheets may be brought to the conveying means 11, and a removal conveyor 24, whereby coated objects may be taken away for succeeding operations.

In order to transfer the sheets evenly and smooth- IDS ly onto the points carried by the belts 12, there is provided a supporting means 25 formed with depressed end portions and disposed between the conveyor means 23 and the conveyor means 11.

Claim.

This invention relates to coating apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus adapted for the continuous application of liquid material to a surface of objects such as veneer sheets and 5 the like.

An object of the invention is the provision of apparatus for use in the continuous application of liquid materials to surfaces in a particularly efficient and effective manner.

A further object is the provision of apparatus whereby the coating of the under side of sheets is avoided.

Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

IS The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be in20 dicated in the claim.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in 25 which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of one form of apparatus embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, taken from above, showing the active rim of the conveyor means, 30 with veneer sheets carried thereon;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating a modified form of apparatus; and

Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the form of belt construction shown in Fig. 1.

In the application of liquid material to veneer sheets for the purpose of providing an adhesive material, for assisting in the use of adhesive material otherwise applied, for providing a coating on the surface of the sheets, or for other purposes, 40 the operator is faced with problems inherent in the necessity of running sheets more or less spaced from one another, and of using sheets of different widths in successive, continuously conducted operations.

There is accordingly a considerable amount of glue or other liquid deposited on the conveyor elements either between the ends of the sheets or at points beyond the sides of the smaller sheets. Obviously, it is undesirable that sticky or corro50 sive liquids which are sprayed on portions of the belts should be deposited on the underside of a sheet carried by those portions of the belt when they again come around to sheet-moving position.

With the foregoing and other considerations in 55 view, the present invention contemplates the pro80 $ veyor means 11 and the conveyor means 24, a supporting means 26 having depressed end portions.

As will be understood, the cleaning means may consist of one or more baths, one or more fluidejecting means, or any suitable combmation of such elements. In Fig. 3, there is shown an arrangement wherein the cleaning bath is eliminated but wherein there is utilized a pair of liquid-ejecting means 18α and 18b acting on the belts at a point where they are free from the roller 13. m this instance, there is provided catch means comprising a baffle 27 and a reception trough 28.

1,979,750 riinarily high degree of efficiency and in a manner wherein the uncoated surfaces of the objects are preserved in substantially their original state, and that this is accomplished without material loss of the spraying liquid.

Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting ^s®p^se·
