GUMMED PAPER AND TAPE

Claim.

This invention relates to gummed paper and tape provided on its gummed surface with a plurality of longitudinally extending weakened lines so disposed with relation to one another that when the paper or tape is initially positioned 5 along an edge of a package to be wrapped, one or other of the weakened lines necessarily falls into alignment with this edge for facilitating and improving wrapping of the package.

Accordingly, an object of the invention is to 10 provide paper and tape possessing characteristics of the type referred to.

Another object is to provide paper and tape having weakened lines of the kind described which are likewise useful in effecting the even 15 distribution of the moisture applied to the gummed face and which retain the moisture in diffused condition, precluding concentration of the moisture, known as “laking”.

Another object is the production of gummed 20 paper and tape having means to prevent moisture from oozing out at the sides when pressure is applied to the paper to position it, and to preclude slipping of the paper at this time.

These and other objects are attained by the 25 means described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a fragmental plan view of the gummed surface of the paper or tape of the present invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on the line 2—2 of Fig. 1.

The present invention contemplates the use of paper 5 of suitable strength to which, on one surface thereof, is applied a coating of glue 6. 35 The coated surface is then provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending lines 7 which may be produced by any suitable process or means, the essential point being that the paper 5 is rendered more readily flexible along lines 7 (Cl. 91—68) than along the intervening spaces between the lines, so that folding and creasing along any one of the lines is readily effected. It will be observed, by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, that the longitudinal weakened lines 7 are spaced from one another a distance no greater than twice the 60 width of one of said lines, whereby when the paper or tape is initially disposed upon and extended longitudinally of an edge to be covered, one or other of said lines necessarily falls into alignment with said edge for facilitating folding 85 and for effecting straight line attachment of the paper or tape.

The gummed paper or tape of this invention has a wide range of usefulness. In the manufacturing establishments, the wide sheets of 70 scored paper may be divided longitudinally into any desired width with great facility, due to the lining of the paper. In the application of the paper or tape to another surface, when the gummed face is evenly moistened, the moisture 75 remains evenly distributed due to the lining of the gummed surface.
