The invention relates to improvements in suspenders.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of suspenders and to pro5 _vi_de simple, practical, efficient and comparatively: inexpensive suspenders provided with an all elastic rise back and inelastic shoulder straps connected together and having their connected portions arranged in overlapped relation exposing the shoulder straps at the outer face of the connecting means and the rise back at the inner face of the connecting, means so that the suspenders at the said connecting means will present a more finished and attractive appearance than ¹⁵ heretofore.

A further object of the invention is to provide suspenders having an all elastic rise back of a. sufficient height to afford ample elasticity to.the suspenders and increased freedom of movement ²⁰ without the necessity of employing any elastic material in the ‘ shoulder straps whereby the shoulder straps may be constructed wholly of inelastic material and will be adapted to lend them_2r selves to style features which elastic shoulder ⁰ straps, because of the weave , of elastic webbing, cannot receive.

The connecting member consists of a plate of metal or other suitable material and is composed of a substantially triangular body portion and a laterally extended base portion .4. The triangular body portion which is provided with a ⁶⁵triangular opening, 5 is formed by a horizontal top side 6 and downwardly converging sides 7 connected at their upper ends to the top sides 6 and at their lower ends to the laterally extending base portion 4 and formed integral with the 70 same.

The three sides of the triangular body portion are- provided· with top and side slots 8 and 9 and . the laterally extended base portion 4 is provided with a horizontal slot 10 which is arranged in 7® parallelism with the top slot 8. The top slot 8 is horizontal and the side slots 9 converge downwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts .hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the, accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. .

Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the connecting plate or member illustrating in dot and dash lines the manner of threading the shoulder straps and the rise back through the slots of the connecting to form two sides, is extended at the fold across the inner face of the connecting member 3, and the sides are passed through the side slots 9 and are extended upwardly and passed through · the top slot 8 and are crossed in passing through the top slot and extend upwardly and diverge upwardly, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. This threading of the material of the shoulder straps through the connecting ; member presents a finished and attractive appearance at the outer face of the connecting member. The rise back 2 which is relatively long consists of a single piece of elastic webbing which is doubled to form two sides or back straps and . which is passed through the slot 8 at the inner face of the connecting member. The sides formed by doubling the elastic material are then passed through the bottom slot 10 from the inner face ,θθ of the connecting member and the sides or back straps diverge, downwardly from the top slot 8 and present a smooth flat finished appearance at the inner face of the connecting member. The upper portion of the elastic material of the rise back between the top and bottom of the connecting member overlaps the attached portion of the material of the shoulder straps so that there is a bmding action against the elastic material member. of the rise back, whereby the elastic material of.no

Suspenders comprising shoulder straps consisting of a single piece of material, a rise back consisting of a single piece of material doubled to form two sides, and a connecting member com- 95 posed of an approximately triangular body portion having top and side slots and a base portion having. a slot, the material of the shoulder straps being extended across the body portion of the connecting member and passed upwardly l°0 through the side slots thereof and through the top slot of the same, and the material of the rise back being passed through the top slot and the bottom slot of the connecting member and arranged in overlapping relation, the attached 105 portion of the shoulder straps forming a finished appearance at one face of the connecting member and the attached portion of the rise back presenting a finished appearance at the other faceof the connecting member, said overlapped por- HO tions of the shoulder straps and rise back having a tight frictional engagement with each other, whereby a binding and clamping action is produced on the rise back to prevent the latter from slipping through the top and bottom slots and H® maintain the rise back firmly in position.

120 top and bottom openings and will be securely retained in proper position owing to the binding action resulting from the frictional engagement of the material of the shoulder straps and the 5 rise back resulting from the overlapping of the attached portions of the same. The suspenders at the inner and outer faces of the connecting member presents a finished and highly attractive appearance and a ready assembling of the parts 10 of the suspenders without any stitching as the means for connecting the shoulder straps to the rise back, is effected. The method of threading or passing the material of the shoulder straps and the material of the rise back through the slots 15 of the connecting member is clearly indicated by the dot and dash lines a and b in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

The rise back is provided at the lower ends of the sides with button holes 11 preferably formed 20 by tabs 12 or reinforcing pieces of leather or any other suitable material, and the front ends of the shoulder straps are provided with suspender ends 13 of the ordinary constructon. The rise back which is relatively long is approximate25 ly 10½ inches in height and constitutes substantially 30% to 35% of the entire suspenders, . whereas with the ordinary suspenders the elastic material of the rise back is only about 4½ inches in length and such elastic material is approxi30 mately 15% or 16% of the material of the suspenders. By providing an all elastic rise back the suspenders are afforded ample elasticity and greater freedom of movement than heretofore and the shoulder straps may be made wholly of 35 inelastic material without affecting perfect comfort of the wearer. Also by making the shoulder straps wholly of non-elastic material they may be ornamented with style features impossible with elastic shoulder straps because of the weave of 40 the elastic material.
