BUILDING FACING

Claims. (Cl. 72—19) to the present invention. Furthermore it may be insulated against fire and. thus a fire-proof structure may be provided.

In the body of the board 7, on one face thereof, I form grooves 9 which may. be extended eo across the face of the board to outline any. desired shape and made to define any desired size of area, so that the grooves may be used to outline any style or shape or size of building block or stone or brick. Applied to the outer face of 65 the board so as to form a coating thereof is a layer 8 of asphalt, tar or other suitable waterproofing or waterresistant material. This layer 8 also coats the grooves 9. Before applying the layer 8 the entire board may, if desired, be sub- To jected to impregnatiton with waterproofing or fire-proofing material. The grooves 9 may be molded or pressed into the material or body 7 when the same is in a plastic form or when it is being manufactured, or the same may be 75 placed therein afterwards either by pressing or . by the use of a scoring machine of suitable type.

Secured, to the outer facing of the body 7, and preferably through the adhesive qualities of the layer 8 is a facing 10 formed preferably 80 from ordinary slate, coated, asphalt roofing ma- . terial. It may also be formed of the same' material as the body 7 with a coating of asphalt, tar or the like with the outer surface stoned or coated with small particles of stone 11 or slate 85 or similar material. It will be noted that the facing 10 overlies the grooves 9, so that the space 12 is of less width than the grooves 9.

The outer face of the facing is covered with a sheet of paper 19 or other suitable easily re- 90 moved material so that when the mortar is placed in the grooves 9 the facing 10 will not become dirtied or stained.

The strips or pieces of board 7 may be nailed by the nails 20 to the studding or supporting θ⁵skeleton 21 of the building and thus take the place of the sheeting and veneering now commonly used. The grooves 9 are to be filled with mortar or similar plastic material which will outline the bricks or building blocks. This mortar may, of course, be of any suitable color and when the proper coloring of mortar is used and the proper color of the facing 10 is obtained a surface is effected which will appear in all par- 105 ticulars as a brick construction so that even a' very close inspection may not reveal the type of the construction. My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a building facing adapted for mounting on buildings of various types so as to dispense with the necessity of bricks, stones or ₅ the like in buildings which are . built entirely of such materials or veneered therewith, while at the same time the appearance of such a type of building will be maintained.

It is an object of the present invention to pro10 vide a facing material which will be of weather resisting qualities and of such a size and construction that the same may be easily and quickly used by artisans so as to render a construction quite economical.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a facing material of this class formed in sheets from sufficiently flexible and strong material as to afford the outer enclosure of the building weather proof and of such insulating 20 qualities as to be weather resistant at all times.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a facing material of this class having mortar receiving grooves formed therein so that the mortar when placed in the grooves will 25 be locked in position.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a facing of this class formed from or into sheets so arranged and constructed that the meeting edges of adjacent pieces or strips may 30 be effectively concealed.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which,

It is preferred that the invention be used with suitable insulating board or material of the built up type several kinds of which are now well known to the trade. This type of material may ⁵⁰ be built from a molding or pressing operation and is generally formed from pulp of a fibrous nature so that the board or material when completed is of a yieldable or semi-resilient nature. This material may be molded or formed into ⁵³ various sizes and forms and lends itself well

1.926.257 with the tongue extending outwardly as at 14, this tongue being the visible portion.

At the end edges of the pieces or strips of board 7 I provide a series of recesses or pockets 5 15 and 16 in which may be positioned loose joint block 17 having its outer face treated as the body 7 is treated. At the rear, face of the block 17 is an outwardly projecting flange which will serve as a nailing strip whereby the block may 10 be secured in position. When nailing this strip the nails would be driven through the space separating the adjacent edges of the bodies 7. This block will also serve to cover the nails 20 which secure the pieces of the body 7 in position. In 15 this way the joint is entirely sealed and concealed, as the mortar will surround this block.

From this description of the invention it is believed obvious that the advantages enumerated are present and that a durable, light, easily 20 installed and cheap construction is provided which possess all of the advantage of the usual brick or brick veneer type of construction.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction I do not wish 25 to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
