Claims. '(CL 16—147) with a .closure member for closing an opening of any structure. .
In. the drawing, a: casing is indicated at10 and this casing; defines; an opening 11. Associated with this casing to close, the opening 11 is a closure c0 member 12, which we-prefer to term herein as a “door”. With this casing and door is associated
In the present instance our improved door mounting includes a hinge structure generically 70 indicated at 15. This hinge structure includes hinge leaves 16 and 17. .
The hinge leaf .17. includes a body plate 18 and a knuckle 19 which is preferably formed as an integral.part of the body plate 18. Provided in 75 the foody plate 18 are openings 20 through which project , the connecting screws 21 whereby the hinge leaf .17 is connected to the door 12.
The knuckle 19, as shown, includes a relatively wide plate 22 bifurcated; to provide oppositely 80 disposed fingers 23 defining a slot 24.
The hinge leaf 16 includes a body plate; 25 providing oppositely disposed knuckles 26 arranged ;in spaced relation with respect to each other , and joined together on one; side by a plate 27 formed 85 integral with the knuckles as shown. The outer edge 28 of this plate extends outwardly from the body plate 16 to a point outwardly of the . longitudinal axis of a pintle 29 carried; between . the knuckles as shown. The body plate 25 is 90 provided with openings 30 for the projection of - flection between this hinge leaf and the casing
10.

This invention relates to·-certain novel improvements in door mountings and has for its ^principal . object7the provision of an, improved construction of this’character which will be highs ly efficient in use arid economical in manufacture.
The present invention constitutes an improve- . ment over the-invention disclosed in'the appli- ........- —-- —- . , ...
cation filed by William P. Huebner, on or- about our improved door mounting 13 and door late -March 28 1930 Ser. No1. 439,763, for Betters Pat- structures 14, each of which will be now described nn a Door mounting in detail. Each of the door mountings 13 are G5
Among the salient objects of this invention .substantially similarin“ is to provide a door mounting which will .permit . fore, the description herein will foe .equally apphthe door to be opened from either of the side -cable; toflnyoneflf the door — door jambs of the: door openings and; wherein the - -15 door mounting is of such arrangement that : should, by accident or negligence, one side of the door mounting not be completely disposed in an operative position upon opening of the opposite : side the door will be retained in position thereby '20 preventing the door from accidently being displaced froiri its mountings completely.
, A still further : object of' the invention is to provide a hinge structure for a door, window, οιother closure member for an opening whereby -125 one unit of the hinge structure may be completely detached from the other unit of the hinge structure by pulling· pressure applied to the one hinge structure.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
'30 : The invention consists in the riovel combina: tion; and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described arid claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing •35 the preferred form of construction and in which:

terminating at its inner end portion with a reduced Opening 33 which opens into the slot 24. Slidably mounted in this opening 33 is a head bearing latch pin 34, the inner end portion of 100 which is beveled as at 35 for reasons hereinafter Understood.
Bearing against the head of the pin 34 is a spring 36 arranged in the bore 32 and compressed ! against this head by means of a set screw 37. 105 ' · By adjusting the head screw 37 the tension of L the spring may be readily regulated.
........Ό From the description set forth relative to the
In the use of our.invention, it is understood that hinge leaf 16 it will be seen that by the relative · . §5 our improved door mounting may be associated position and design of the knuckles 26 arid plate
1.925.798 that a relatively deep socket is provided to receive the fingers 23 for accomplishing the purpose herein set forth.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, the latch struc5 tures 14 each include a body plate 38 having suitable openings 39 formed therein for the passage of connecting screws 40 whereby to effectuate connection between the body plate and the door 12. This body plate provides a housing 41 and 10 slidably arranged in the housing 41 is a bolt 42 having a reduced cylindrical stem 43 projecting through an opening 44 formed in the housing 41. The bolt is urged in an outer position by means of a spring 45 arranged in the housing between 15 a wall thereof and the bolt 42. The bolt, has one end extending exteriorly of the housing and this end provides a latch head 46, which latch head includes a notch 47 adapted to receive the pintle 48 carried by a keeper plate 49. This 20 keeper plate 49 includes spaced knuckles 50 between which is arranged the pin 48 and these knuckles are likewise connected together at one side by means of a plate 52 similar to the plate 27.
The bolt 42 includes a transverse opening 53 25 and projecting into this opening for engagement with the bolt is a pin or lug 54 which is formed as an integral part of an operating handle 55 pivotally supported between suitable bearings 56 carrying a pintle 57 projected through the operat30 ing handle as shown.
As indicated herein, by the use of door mountings constructed in accordance with the description herein the door may be opened from either of the side jambs and this is accomplished in 35 the following manner. To open the door from the left hand jamb the operating handle of the latch structure indicated at “A” is manipulated in a direction to slide the bolt 42 against the action of the spring 45 whereby to disengage the latch notch from engagement with the pin 48. Now by applying outward pulling pressure on the handle the door will swing upon the door mountings oh the left hand side. The door: may be closed in the usual manner by applying pressure 0 to the door in closing direction. Assuming that by negligence or by accident the door is not completely closed but that the fingers of the door mountings on the left side are in close proximity _ with the pins of the hinge leaf 16 on this side of the door, but not in proper engagement so as to complete a connection. If the operator grasps the operating handle of the latch structure on the right hand side of the door and manipulates rr this handle in a direction to disengage the latch 00 head from its pintle on this side of the door it is obvious that unless some means is provided that the door will completely drop from position in the door opening and probably injure the oper6Q ator or otherwise create damage. When this condition exists it is pointed out that as soon as the operator applies pressure to the right hand side of the door the door will move a very short distance, which distance is not sufficient to dis6g engage the fingers from confinement between the knuckles 26 and the plate 27 because at this point the weight of the door, as shown in Fig. 6, will be transposed to both or one of the door mountings on the right hand side and consequently the fingers will wedge between the knuckles 26 and against the plate 27. Lateral movement of the door under these conditions is prevented by reason of the fact that the plate 27 has its edge 28 disposed sufficiently far enough beyond the lon75 gitudinal axis of the pin 29 and consequently complete disconnection between the fingers and the hinge leaf 16 is prevented. It will thus be seen that the door cannot drop from its position in the opening beyond a point where the wedging effect takes place between the fingers and the knuckles 26 and plate 27. Therefore, if the door 80 is inadvertently left partially open at one side the opening action of the door from the other side will attract attention to that effect and consequently injury to the operator is prevented and complete disassembly of the door averted. 85
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not 90 wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
