Claims. (Cl. 206—44)

This invention relates to improvements in display boxes.

The primary object of .the invention resides in a cardboard box in which merchandise may be 6 packed for shipment, and when received and opened by the retail merchants, the same may be folded to produce a double tier display stand by which the merchandise may be attractively displayed for sale.

Another feature of the invention is to provide a cardboard box in which a portion of the box body is swung upon itself to open the box and which portion is supported upon the top of the box body within the confines thereof for displaying articles 15 or packages originally contained within the box to produce a step-back double tier display box.

A further object is the provision of a display box having the above features which is constructed of a single blank of scored cardboard or the ²⁰ like, which is easy to set up for use, and rigid when opened to display position.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the 25 essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the display box ³⁹ in closed position.

Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on the line 2—2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the box in open or display position.

⁴⁰ Figure 7 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is constructed.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates a single blank of cardboard or other stiff bendable material from ⁴⁵ which my display box is constructed, and which blank is of substantially rectangular configuration in plan as seen in Figure 7 of the drawings. The blank 10 is foldable lengthwise on the spaced fold lines 11 and 12 and crosswise on the fold lines ⁶⁰ 13, 14 and 15. The above mentioned fold lines divide the blank into a top wall flap 16, top wall proper 17, top wall flap 18, side wall 19, front wall 20, side wall 21, rear wall 22, bottom lock flap 23, botton wall 24, bottom lock flap 25, and a bottom wall flap 23.

The top wall flaps 16 and 18 are provided with transverse fold lines 27 and 28 which are disposed approximately midway between their length, the said fold lines extending from the free edges of the sides of the flap to the longitudinal fold line 11. Joining the fold lines 27 and 28 and extending across one corner of the side walls 19 and 21, are scored or weakened lines 29 and 30 respectively, the same being joined by scored or weakened lines 31 extending transversely of the front walls 20, the scored line 31 being disposed adjacent the fold line 12 or adjacent the bottom of the front wall and formed with a curved portion to provide a finger tab 32 for a purpose to be presently explained.

The rear section of the top wall flap 16 is formed by the fold line 27 and is provided with spaced angularly disposed slits 33 for receiving the tongues 34 provided on a locking flap 35 which is coextensive with one side of the rear wall 22. One corner of the top wall flap 16 is provided with a locking tab 36 for reception in a slit or slot 37 provided in the front section of the top wall flap 18. The opposite sides of the top wall 17 are free of the adjacent top wall flaps 16 and 18 and is formed by slitting or cutting the blank inwardly from the outer edge of the fold line 11. The top wall 17 is provided with spaced fold lines 38 and 39, the same being transversely disposed of the top wall while cut from the material between the said fold lines is a display tab 40. The outer free edge of the top wall 17 is formed with a locking tongue 41 for reception in a slot 42 formed in the rear section of the top wall flap 18 when the box is set up and in display position.

Coextensive with the side wall 19 is a fastening flap 43 which when the box is in a set up position, is adhesively secured to the inside of the rear wall 22 as will be seen by reference to Figure 3 of the drawings.

The front wall 20 is formed with a pair of angularly disposed slots or slits 44 for the reception of the.locking tongues 34 of the flap 35 when the box is in display position as seen in Figure 6 of the drawings. The bottom lock flap 23 is provided with a pair of locking tongues 45 for reception in slots or slits 46 provided in the bottom flap 25.

In assembling the box for use, the same is folded on the fold lines 11 and 12, 13, 14, and 15 into substantially rectangular configuration as shown in Figure 1, the flap 43 being secured to the rear wall 22. The bottom flaps 24 and 26 are folded inwardly in overlapping engagement, after which the bottom flap 25 is folded beneath the same and that in turn is lapped by the bottom lock flap 23, the locking tongue 45 being received in the slots 46. The folding so far has produced a box open at its top, and after the merchandise is packed into the box, the top wall 17 is folded down, after which it is lapped by the top flap 18 and which flap 18 is lapped by the flap 16, the tongue 36 of this flap being received in the slot 37. With the top held closed by the locking flap 36 at one corner, the same is further

1,925,103 held in a closed position by the bending of the flap 35 over the flap 16 and inserting the locking tabs or tongues 34 into the slots 33. This produces a box in accordance with the position &amp; shown in Figures 1, 2, and 5 of the drawings.

Assume that it is desired to open the box and utilize the same for displaying the contents of the same, the flap 35 is separated from the outer top flap 16 while the locking flap 36 remains in locked 10 position. The operator then presses upon the tab 32 in the front wall to break open the box on the scored or weakened lines 29, 30 and 31, which divides the rectangular shaped box into a lower base section A and a closure section B. 15 After breaking open the box in this manner, the closure section B is swung backwardly upon the fold lines 27 and 28, and these fold lines being substantially midway between the ends of the top wall section permits the rearward swinging 20 of the closure section B to a position where it is within the confines of the walls of the lower base section A as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. When swung to this position, the same is held by inserting the locking tongues 25 34 of the flap 35 into the slots 44. Thus the two sections A and B are firmly locked together, and produces a display box of the double tier type, the upper tier being stepped back from the lower tier to enable the display of the box 30 contents on both the upper and lower tier sections. After swinging the section B back upon the base section A, the inner flap 17 of the top wall is folded on the lines 38 and 39 to produce a vertical upstanding front wall for the upper 35 tier section B, the said wall being secured in vertical position by inserting the locking tongue 41 into the slot 42 of the top wall flap 18. The display tab 40 is then swung upwardly to a position coextensive with the rear fold 47, and if de40 sired advertising indicia 48 may be provided on the tab 40 and the exposed portion of the flap 47.

It has been the practice in constructing display boxes of the multiple tier type to swing a portion of the box body beyond the rear wall of the same, 45 but such construction requires the use of an easel for supporting the upper tier section in order to rigidly support the box and its display besides taking up additional space when in such display position.

From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a box which when broken open is swung to a display position forms a pair of shelves or tiers, the upper one being ⁶⁵ stepped back from the lower and within the confines of the lower base section. That portion of the front wall of the box body integral with the base section A after the section B has been swung to a display position constitutes a front wall to ⁶⁰ confine the articles supported by the lower base section, whereas the wall 47 constitutes a front confining wall for the articles supported in the upper tier section B.

While I have shown and described what I deem ⁰⁵ to be the most desirable embodiment of the invention, I wish it to be understood that such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.
