Broom and mop holder

The invention relates to broom and mop holders.

The present invention is an improvement upon the broom and mop holder construc5 tion shown in my Patent No. 1.485,092, granted February 26, 1924.

The present invention relates to a broom and mop holder construction made primarily of sheet metal, and one object of the· in10 vention is to make such a construction light, strong, efficient and practical in service.

According to the invention of said Patent No. 1,485,092 and also according to the construction of the present invention, there is 15 a central triangular or trapezoidal portion, to wit, a substantially triangular portion, providing downwardly and . outwardly extending faces upon and along which gripping rollers can operate, vertically extend20 ing end .members or handle resisting and holding members against which han dies, of brooms, mops, or the like, can press and be held by and because of the wedging effect of the gripping rollers. The construction is 25 such that downward movement of the handles when in place causes or allows the gripping rollers to engage the handles each at one side thereof and to press the handle· engaged thereby outwardly against the end 30 member corresponding thereto.

One aspect of the present invention contemplates tile forming of these gripping rollers of a yieldable resilient material such as rubber and providing on the peripheral 35 portions of each roller what may be termed peripherally arranged grooved portions thus providing fib portions extending in the same general direction as the axis of the roller.

With these and other objects in view, the . 40 · invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that va45 rious changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

From Figs. 1 and 2, it will be observed .75 that the broom .and mop holder comprises, besides the two indicated clamping rollers, a back or main body member of sheet metal and a front member of sheet metal secured as by rivets to the body member. . . 80

Therein the broom and mop holder as a whole is designated, by 1, It comprises the sheet metal body member or back member designated as 2, and the sheet metal front member 3 that is secured to the back or body 85 member as by means of rivets 4, 5 and 6. In fact these parts are.shaped so as to provide not only .the handle receiving sections 7 and 8, but also the suitable receiving spaces for the/gripping rollers designated by 9, shown 9θ in position in. Figure 1 and in perspective in Fig, 8, the front plate 3. is clearly shown by itself in Fig. 3. As above stated, it is of sheet metal, it is substantially rectangular in shaipe and is provided with.Openings as. .85 10 into and through which the rivets 4, 5 and 6 pass that are relied upon for holding the front member 3 in position in respect to the body member.

The dotted lines A—B—C—D and E—F indicate the location of the main bends to which this sheet 5 of metal is subjected in producing the body member shown more clearly in Figs. 5, 6. and 7. When the plate shown in Fig. 4 is bent so as to produce the body member shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, it will be ob10 served that the following characteristics exist. Assuming that the parts occupied in position which the broom and mop holding occurs when in use, then it will be observed that the part A—B—B—A provides a.cen15 trally located forward portion that extends vertically and transversely, that' from the lateral edges of this trapezoidal· or triangular shaped forward section that rearwardly extends downwardly and outwardly inclined 20 roller supporting surfaced portions defined by the parts A—B—D—C which are in the forms of parallelograms, that from the rear edges C—D of these parallelogram sections that extend outwardly what may be termed 25 vertically and transversely extending substantially trapezoidal spacing sections defined by C—D—E—F, the outer edges of wifi ch, E—F, extend substantially vertically and that from the edges E—F there for30 wardly projects end sections or handle resisting members defined by E—F—G—H. As a matter of fact, the end sections E—F—G—H, while in effect rectangular in form, are outwardly bowed along the cen35 tral portions thereof as indicated at J to provide a curved receiving space for the handles of the broom or mop.

The forward central section is provided with rivet receiving openings 12 whereby the 40 front plates can be secured to the back member through the medium of the rivets 4, 5 and 6, as previously referred to. It will be also observed that the ends G—H indicated by 13 in Figs. 6 and 7 practically extend for45 wardly to the plane defined by the front of the trapezoidal central portion A—B— B—A and which portion is designated by 14 in Figs. 6 and 7.

The front member 3 has a horizontal di50 mension or width equal to the length of the base A—A of the forward central trapezoidal or triangular section A—B—B—A. The outer vertical edges of the plate 3 are spaced from the forward edges 13 of the 55 end members sufficiently to permit the insertion or removal of a mop or broom handle as and when desired. It will also be noted that the distances between the outer vertical edges of the front plate 3 and the edges ⁶⁰ 13 are less than the diameter of the compression roller 9 employed in the device. It will also be noted that each horizontal surface element of the parallelogram inclined sections A-—B—D—C extends at right an⁶⁵ gles to the vertically and transversely extending face portion A—B—B—A, as is apparent from inspection of Fig. 6. In other words, this inclined section is positioned so that because of the horizontal surface supporting elements just mentioned the sub- ?₀stantially cylindrical rollers 9 will properly rest against the same. Holes 15 are provided in each of the trapezoidal spacing sections C—D—E—F, whereby the device as a whole can be suitably supported in place 75 as by nails in a wall structure and in order to facilitate the inserting of the nails through this back member these holes are located outwardly in respect to the side edges of the front member 3. It will also be ob- 80 served that small hook shaped members, as 16, 17 and 18, are provided, the hook member 16 being provided in the front central portion of the. structure and is held in place by means of a rivet 5 so that the hook 85 portion can extend forwardly and upwardly in respect to the front plate 3. The side hooks 17 and 18 are riveted to the central portion of the vertically extending end sections so that the hooks extend outwardly 90 and upwardly in respect thereto but in such a manner that the rivet heads 19 at the inner side of said end sections do not substantially extend beyond the inner faces of said end sections. 95
