IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PACKAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 189,604, dated April 17,1877; application filed February 17,1877.

To all whom it may concern :

Be it known that I, Pierre Cauhape, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new aud Improved Tobacco-Package, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved paper package; Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a section, of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of my invention is to pack chewing and other tobacco in such a manner that the moisture is preserved, the deleterious influence of the humid sea-air in ocean shipment prevented, and a water-proof protective package for the tobacco obtained.

The invention consists of a package of leaf or cut tobacco, prepared in quantities of suitable size, and covered by a layer of elastic gelatinous substance.

In the drawing, A represents a tobaccopackage of suitable size, formed of leaf or cut tobacco as prepared for chewing, smoking, or other purposes.

The package A is dipped into a mixture of gelatine, honey, and gum-arabic, which forms, when dry, a covering-layer, B, of great elasticity.

The tobacco is, by the gelatinous layer B, preserved in air-and-moisture-proof state, and the drying out of the same, when shipped to hot climates, as well as the absorption of the humid sea-air, that spoils the tobacco, prevented.

The tobacco may in this manner be shipped in its original state to any distance without the use of the more expensive tin-foil, and without undergoing the least alteration.

This covering is of especial advantage for tobacco that has to be shipped across the ocean,as the tobacco is fully protected against the salt-water air, aud not injured thereby.

The covering-layer may be placed directly on the tobacco, and the package then wrapped up, or the package, covered with the paper, may be dipped into the gelatinous substance, as desired. In either case the tobacco is fully protected and preserved with its original flavor and moisture.
