Golf bag

This invention is an improvement in golf bags, and more particularly in the compartments usually found with bags for bolding the balls.

C In the usual construction of bag, the ball compartment, which is of flexible material, and includes a receptacle and a cover therefor, in the form of a flap, has no means for securing the cover into place, except a strap and 13 buckle.

For this reason any unauthorized person can gain access to the balls merely by unbuckling the strap, and unscrupulous persons are liable to purloin some or all of the balls, Γ.0 when the bag is unguarded.

One. of the primary, objects of the present invention is the provision of a bag, having a ball compartment, provided with the usual covering flap and having mechanism in con20 nection therewith for enabling the flap to be locked to the wall of the compartment, thus closing it, and preventing unauthorized removal of the balls.

Another object is the provision of a form 25 of locking mechanism, of a character to substantially connect the flap throughout its width to the compartment wall, thereby to entirely prevent access to the balls until the flap is released.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims ap35 pended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.

The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a golf bag of usual construction, indicated at 1, and of any desired material. The bag has the usual ball compartment indicated at 2, adapted to be closed by a flap 3, which may be connected to the outer wall of the compartment by a ·· strap 4 and a buckle 5.

With this arrangement it is apparent that to gain access to the balls 6 in the compartment, it is only necessary to unbuckle the strap, and when the bag is away from the immediate supervision of the owner, there is ₅₅no protection for the balls.

lhe ball receptacle and the flap are usually of flexible material, such as cloth of a suitable character, leather, or the like, and it will be apparent that any locking mechanism go for connecting the flap to the outer compartment wall must connect said flap throughout substantially its entire width, or at points well spaced apart from each other and so arranged as to make impossible sufficient sep- gs aration of the flap and container wall between such points to extract a ball.

With this purpose in view, I provide the flap with openings 7 near its opposite side edges, and the side walls of the receptacle 70 wide openings 7, shown in dotted linos, these openings are so placed that when the flap is in. closed position those of the flap and the side walls of the receptacle will be m register. ₇₅

Each of the openings is reinforced by a grommet or eye-let 8, and a bolt 9 is adapted to be passed through the registering openings at each side of the flap and receptacle wall, the said bolt having at one end a loop so 10, providing a handle for manipulating the bolt, and providing a stop for limiting the movement of. the bolt through the openings. . The opposite end of the bolt has an openrug trough which may be passed a shackle 85 12 of a padlock 13, any suitable form of padlock being adapted for the purpose. It will be apparent from the description and the drawing, that the flap is connected with the receptacle wall, so that it cannot be separated 98 from the wall oyer a distance sufficient to enable the extraction of a ball, without removing the bolt and this can be done only when the padlock is opened with a key.
