My invention relates to new and. useful inn· provements in a safety razor holder and blade, and has for one of its objects to generally improve the construction of devices of S this kind so that there shall be a micrometer adjustment of the curvature of the blade for shaving purposes. : .
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the guard and blade 1® relative to each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting - the top plate or head of the holder relative to the guard and component 'parts thereof by the application 15 of the adjusting force or “pull” at-the ends of the head or top plate instead of at a point or points between the ends. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a guard having straight edges in contra20 distinction to the usual serrated'guards which will act as a skin tightener or smoother, to produce an unwrinkled surface over which the blade is to pass, said guard also· acting to remove the major part of the lather prior 25 to the cutting action taking place in order to prevent said lather clogging the blade. Said/guard-will also follow every contour of the surface over which it passes without forming wrinkles or ridges.
30 Another object of the invention is to so construction the parts and mount them relative to each other that water may readily pass between the severe 1 part s for quickly and thoroughly cleansing the holder and the 33 blade therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly assembling a blade in or removing the same from the holder;
40 A further object of the invention is to provide means for accurately aligning the blade relative: to the holder and conveniently locating the. adjusting means whereby the device may be readily operated by one hand in producing: the various adjustments to the blade.
A still further object of the-invention is to provide an imperforate safety razor blade except for a notch at each end.
With these and other ends in view, this

invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set 'forth; and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that , those skilled in the art to 55 which this invention .appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail^ referring by numerals to .the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application,: in 69 which:—
Fig. l is a side elevation of a .safety razor holder and blade constructed in accordance with my invention showing the. same ready for use. .
Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.; 1 with the top plate or head thrown back into an open position.
Fig· 4 fis a top-plan view of Fig. 3. .. 70
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view, of the device: with the handle left in elevation except for a small part that is broken out to illustrate, a detail of construction and the lower part-of said handle being broken away. 75
Fi g. 6 is a view at right angles to Fig. .5.. with the upper parts broken away as f ar back as the axis of the handler with the-exception that.said handle is left in.elevation. . \
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the combined so guard and clamping bridge on a slightly reduced scale.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged face view of the safety razor blade.
In’ carrying out my invention as herein 85 embodied,’ 10 represents a suitable handle having an intermediate portion near, its upper end provided with a screw thread 1.1 while the part above the threaded portion is preferably reduced in size to form a spindle 90 12, and / if foun d desirable,. the extreme upper end. may be further reduced in size to provide a teat 13 and form a shoulder 14 nn which the combined guard and clamping bridge 15 rests when .the latter is mounted on 95 the handle. The teat may be of noncircular shape in cross section as illustrated so as to fit in a similarly shaped hole 16 un said combined guard and damping bridge, or the latter may be mounted on the handle in any 303
1,853,867 other suitable and well known manner either in a way to practically prevent their separation or to removably attach one to the other.
5 A base plate 17 having a depending hollow shank 18 is slidably mounted upon the spindle portion 12 of the handle and in the shank is a pin or key 19 having its inner end projecting into a longitudinal groove or keyway 20 10 in the handle to prevent rotation of the base plate while permitting the longitudinal sliding movement thereof.
An adjusting nut 21 of tubular form is swiveled to the lower end of the shank 18 and 15 is internally threaded throughout a portion of its length as at 22 for coaction with the threads 11 on the handle 10 whereby rotation of said adjusting nut will move the same longitudinally on the handle and therefore 20 carry the base plate 17 along said handle for a purpose to be presently described.
A hinge knuckle 23 is provided at one end of the base plate 17 while a central tongue 24 projects from the opposite end and at each 25 side of the tongue 24, the end edge of said base plate is beveled to form lips 25.
A concavo-convex top plate or head 26 has a pair of legs 27 at one end by which said top plate or head is hinged to the base plate 17 30 through the medium of a pintle 28 passing through the legs 27 and the hinge knuckles 23, and said top plate or head is provided with another pair of legs 29 at the opposite end provided with notches 30 in their inner 3B surfaces for coaction with the lips 25 to fasten and temporarily hold the top plate or head 26 in a closed position as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 and said legs 29 straddle the tongue 24 and are provided with shoulders 40 31 at their lower ends to engage said tongue and thereby limit the closing movement of the top plate or head.
Lugs 32 depend from the underside of the top plate or head 26 adjacent the ends thereof 45 on the longitudinal center of said top plate for registration with apertures 33 in the ends of the clamping bridge 34 constituting a part of the combined guard plate and clamping bridge and said bridge 34 is carried by and 50 preferably formed integral with piers 35 which in turn are carried by and preferably formed integral with the guard member of element 36, the latter being of the proper length to freely pass between the pairs of legs 55 27 and 29 but considerably wider than the top plate or head 26 and likewise may be wider than the base plate 17 as shown. It is to be particularly noted that the longer or side ft edges of the guard are smooth and straight 60 and project beyond the contiguous edges of the top plate or head 26.
An oblong flexible blade 37 is imperforate except for a notch 38 in each end for alignment with the apertures 33 in the clamping 65 bridge 34 and for registration with the lugs and the longer sides or edges are sharpened to provide cutting edges 39.
With the safety razor holder open as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a blade 37 may be placed upon the inverted top plate or head 26 with Ά the notches 38 in registration with the lugs 32. Said top plate or head 26 is then swung over and sufficient force applied thereto to spring the free ends of the legs 29 over the lips 25 until the grooves 30 register with said lips at 75 which time said top plate or head will be held against accidental opening.
By holding the handle 10 and rotating the adjusting nut 21 in the proper direction, which can be done with one hand, said ad- 80 justing nut 21 will be threaded downward along the handle 10 so as to move the base plate and therefore the top plate or head with it and in a downward direction relative to the combined guard and clamping bridge so 85 that the blade lying between the bridge element and the top plate or head will be flexed to any desirable degree by the micrometer adjustment of the coacting screw threads on the handle and adjusting nut. 90
The pressure is applied through the medium of the legs 27 and 29 at the ends of the top plate 26 so that there is little likelihood of said top plate being sprung out of alignment wherefore a safety razor is provided 95 which when adjusted for use cannot cut the skin of the user.
In actual practice the best results are obtained if the razor is used with a slight rocking motion and as the same is drawn over 400 the part of the body being shaved, the skin will be drawn quite taut so as io be made smooth for the passage of the blade thereover and since said guard has no serrations of any kind, no ridges or wrinkles will be produced 105 and there will not be any pulling and scraping which often results in skin irritation.
Since the guard scrapes the major part of the lather off the face before the blade contacts with the hair, said blade will not be '110 clogged and the cut hair and lather may be readily removed by simply running water on the device which can pass between the base and top plates from side to side or end to end. 115
Due to the imperforate construction of the blade, its flexibility is even throughout the entire length thereof and yet when in use it is sufficiently rigid to produce a clean cut which eliminates any jumping action and 120 resultant hair pulling and skin irritation.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein illustrated and described as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without 125 departing from the spirit of my invention.
