Adjustable seat

The invention relates to adjustable seats, and relates more particularly to devices of this kind which are capable of being used by fishermen and the like in a small boat, when ⁵ out upon the water and being obliged by the nature of the sport to remain quietly for considerable periods of time, but who desire to have means of from time to time adjusting the position of the device so as to render them¹⁰ selves as comfortable as possible.

One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a seat of the character described which shall be provided with a support for the back of the user and which shall ¹⁵ be capable of adjustment in height, inclination, and other ways, so as to make the same as comfortable as possible.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be in part· set forth in the fol²⁰ lowing specification, and in part will be obvious without being specifically pointed out, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the claim hereof.

²⁵ With the above and other objects of the invention in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as set forth in the claim hereof, one ³⁰ embodiment of the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.

Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of an ³⁵ adjustable seat such as is here referred to, the same being shown as located upon the seat or thwart of a small skiff or other type of boat used by a fisherman, the back-supporting 4o member being shown elevated at a considerable angle;

In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which has been se- ⁶⁰lected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and for description in this specification,! provide a base member 12, which is provided with securing clamps 13, which are adjustably and rotatably secured to said ⁶⁵base member in such a way as to enable them to grip the seat or thwart of a boat, which is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, but which may also be rotated so as to lie flat and be out of the way, ⁷⁰as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The base member 12 is provided on each side with a small groove 14 (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3) into which the outer end of the clamp 13 may pass when the clamps are rotated into their non- ⁷³operative position, as shown in Fig. 4. The base member 12 is shown in plan view in Fig. 7. It is provided with a plurality of roller bearings 15, so as to facilitate the rotation thereupon of the seat member 17, which is ⁸⁰pivotally attached to the base member by a bolt 16.

Pivotally secured in any suitable manner to the back portion of the seat 17 is a standard 18, the outer end of which supports a ⁸⁵cushioned back-support 19. This member 19 is capable of adjustment upon the standard 18, the latter being provided with a series of notches 20 and the member 19 itself being provided with a bolt and wing-nut attach- ⁰⁰ing device, shown at 21 in Figs. 3 and 5, by means of which the member 19 can be connected up with the standard 18 at different heights and at different inclinations, in a manner which will be well understood. The ⁰⁵rear part of the seat member 17 is provided with an upwardly extending swinging link 24, of peculiar formation, which is perhaps best shown in Fig. 5. The outer end of this link is formed so as to adapt it to engage with

1,852,012 ber serving as a base for the other members and adapted to be secured to the seat of a boat or the like, a seat member rotatably attached to said first-named member, a back member notched on its rear face swingingly attached to said seat member, and a bracing member having a U-shaped upper end swingingly attached to said seat, member and adapted to adjustably engage with said back member, whereby said back member may be 75 set at varying angles with said seat member as may be desired: said bracing member being secured to the seat member at a point substantially in the rear of the point of attachment of the back member to said seat mem- so ber and substantially away from.the. usable portion of. said seat , member, whereby, said seat member is. at. all. times- free and unobstructed for use as, a seat..

HENRY GOWER HOSEone or the other of a series of notches 22 in the backward edge of the standard 18, as will be perhaps best seen in Fig. 1, the purpose of these notches 22 and the therewith engag5 ing link 24 being to allow the back-supporting member 19 to be adjusted in different positions, as shown. in Figs.. 1 and·. 2.

The operation of my invention is as follows : For the easy transportation of the same io it may be folded into the position shown in bottom view in Fig. 4 and in- top view in Fig. 5, the gripping members 13 being folded flat into the same plane as the base member 12' and the outer free ends being engaged by the. ¹⁵ grooves 14. When the device is to be put to use, it is placed upon the thwart 11 (shown in dotted lines: in Figs. 1, 2 and 3) and clamped thereto by the gripping members 13. The back-supporting- standard 18 may then 20 be^: adjusted at any desired: inclination, by means of the link 24 and the notches 22,and the: pad member 19 positioned as desired, within certain limits, both as to height and as to inclination. The seat member· 17,. with ²⁵ its; back,, may then be rotated upon. the. base member 12, so as to face in any direction.. When the occupant, of the seat is engaged in fishing, for-instance,, the back. will, usually be adjusted in some such position as is. shown 30 in. Fig. 1, but when it. is desired to use the. oars,, or perform any other operation requiring the body to swing backward and forward from the: hips, the back member is adjusted into-some such position: as; shown in 35 Fig., 2. If it is desired, for any reason to remove, the back member out of the way, it may be folded forward into the. position shown in Fig. 3..

Certain of the. advantages of the invention -^0! have already been herein referred to, but it may be well: to call particular attention to the great flexibility of. adjustment which, is provided for, the. device being, not only capable: of rotation through , the whole circle ⁴⁵but. of adjustment into various positions lor the sake of comfort and utility, as: above pointed out, and also of being removed from the thwart, and folded into a very compact form for the purpose of transportation or ^15e storage. The low centre of gravity of my device· is also a distinct advantage.

I do not limit myself to the particular· details of construction set forth in the foregoing specification and illustrated in the accom⁶⁵ panying drawings, as the same refer to and set forth only one embodiment, of the invention, and it is obvious that the same may be modified, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
