- 1Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:\ 1. In a reversible pump, the combination of a casing having a cylindrical bore with intake . and exhaust ports communicating therewith, and a cylindrical valve member 10C 1,850,567 cylinder the intake port is closed before the exhaust port is opened and sufficient friction is set up to cause a rotation of the valve member with the rotor in either direction until limited by said stop means. 4. In a reversible pump, .the combination of a casing provided with a chamber and intake and exhaust ports communicating therewith, arid a valve member rotatable in said chamber with a fluid tight fit, said valve 75 member provided with a chamber constituting a cylinder, a sliding.rotary piston mounted for rotation in said cylinder, the axis of rotation of said piston being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, a pair 80 of ports in said valve member,, said valve . member being provided on its periphery with a groove, an inwardly extending lug carried on said casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve 85 member in each direction, said ports in the valve member communicating with the ports in said casing and with said cylinder when the valve member has been rotated its limit in either direction, said pair of ports being 90 so arranged that upon rotation of the piston in either direction, the port operating as the inlet port will be closed before the port operating as the outlet port is opened. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 95 signature. AMANDUS c K0 ESSLER. rotatable in said bore, said cylindrical valve member having an eccentrically disposed piston chamber therein, a rotor piston carrymg a sliding piston blade journaled for rotation '5 in said piston chamber, the axis of rotation of said piston being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, said valve member being provided on its periphery with a groove. aii‘ inwardly extending lug carried 10 on said casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member, the inlet and exhaust ports in said valve member being so disposed that the port operating as an inlet port is. closed before the 15 port operating as the discharge port is opened. . . .
- 2In a reversible pump, the combination of a casing having a cylindrical bore with intake and exhaust ports communicating 20 therewith, and a cylindrical valve member rotatable in said bore, said valve member having an eccentrically disposed piston chamber therein, a rotor piston carrying a sliding piston blade journaled for rotation in said 25 piston chamber, the valve member having ports on opposite sides thereof communicating with said chamber and opening into the aforementioned intake and exhaust ports in ( said casing in each of two positions to which 39 said valve may be rotated, the axis of rotation of said piston being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, said valve member being provided on its periphery with a groove, an inwardly extending lug carried 35 oil said casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member, said ports in said valve member being so arranged that the port opening as the inlet port is closed before the port operating 40 as the discharge port is opened.
- 3In a reversible pump, the combination of a casing provided with a substantially cylindrical bore and intake and exhaust ports communicating with said bore, and a valve 45 member snugly fitting and rotatably received in said bore, said valve member being provided with an eccentrically arranged piston chamber therein, a rotor piston carrying a slidable piston blade journaled for rotation 50 in said chamber, the axis of rotation of said .rotor being the same as the axis of rotation of said valve member, said valve member having ports communicating with the aforementioned intake and exhaust ports in. said 55 casing, said valve member being provided on its periphery with a groove, an inwardly extending lug carried on said casing and cooperating with said groove to limit the rotation of said valve member, the ports in said 60 valve and in said casing being in communication when said valve is rotated to its limit in either direction, the ports in the valve member being located at one side of the center line of the piston chamber in said valve 65 whereby in the rotation of the piston in said 100 105 110 115' 120 125 120

of the piston blade C is not material to the operation of the reversing valve D so long i as the rotor B has the same axis of rotation as the valve D.
The valve member D has ports M and N which communicate with'the ports E and F in j xt casin£· As be noted the ports M and N are so arranged in the valve member D that m the rotation of the piston the one operating as the inlet port is closed before 60 the port operating as the discharge port is opened. A sufficient pressure is exerted in this manner as the piston rotates to carry the member D either to the right or left until the end of the groove H engages the pin G, and the fluid will then be expelled at F. Upon reversing the direction of the. rotor B the reverse movement of the valve member D takes place.
. When the valve D is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the piston is traveling in a counterclockwise direction, as the piston blade passes the left hand port M, the fluid sucked into the lower part of the cylinder I is expelled at N, and so on. . With the rotation of the piston in the clockwise direction the valve member is positioned as shown in Fig. 2, and the rotation of the piston C again sucks the fluid in through the port E and expels the same at F.
It is. apparent that in either direction of the piston the suction or intake side is at E while the pressure or exhaust side is always
It is obvious that the rotary valve D may be rotated mechanically by suitable means passing through the wall of the casing A, which means may be operated either by hand or by suitable connections with the machine with which the pump is operated.
While I have shown only one embodiment of my invention, it is understood that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
