IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,539, dated August 29,1876; application filed

July 21,1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Adam Reid, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of. Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Suspenders; and I do hereby declare that the following description, taken iu connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification.

My present invention relates to suspenders; and it consists in providing the shoulderstraps with means whereby the buckles or their equivalent may be set alike on both straps.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I shall proceed to describe its particulars, and thereby refer to the annexed drawing, which represents one of a pair of shoulder-straps provided with my improvement.

A is the shoulder, and B are the brace straps. 0 is the buckle, to which the bracestraps Bare attached. D are a series of marks, lines, or similar figures or characters imprinted, fastened, sewed, woven, or otherwise attached to the shoulder-straps, in colors varying from that or those of said straps, so as to be readily distinguished. These marks are placed equidistant apart, and begin with the end of, and continue for a space or length to be within the usual adjustment of, the brace-straps B. Each successive line, mark, or the like, of a series is of a different character, design, or color, or distinguishable by a different character, design, or color, &amp;c., agreeing iu position on both straps, and their purpose is to enable the person wearing a pair of suspenders or braces to ascertain at a glance whether or not they⁷ are of equal length without compelling the wearer to measure or count the marks. Each of these marks, lines, or characters being different, the eye will at once recognize the coinciding ones, and thereby enable the instantaneous adjustment of the buckle or brace straps of a pair of suspenders. The adjustment is made first by arranging one buckle or its equivalent to its proper place, and then by setting the opposite buckle upon the corresponding mark, when both straps will be exactly alike in length.

In the drawing I have shown the shoulderstrap, provided with transverse lines numbered and lettered consecutively. These lines may be printed upon the straps as being the readiest and cheapest means of carrying my invention into effect; but they may also be sewed, woven, or otherwise affixed thereto without changing the nature of my invention.

My said .invention is applicable to all kind and styles of braces, and forms a readily salable article of manufacture.

I am well aware that suspenders are made having a series of eyelets inserted for the passage of the tongues of the buckle, and that by counting the number of rows the exact position of the buckle can be ascertained. Such an arrangement I do not claim as my invention ; but my improvements may be readily adapted to that class of suspenders by using for each successive transverse row of eyelets a different color, agreeing in position on both shoulder-straps, whereby the eye will also instantaneously detect the. coinciding ones, and the adjustment readily effected without measuring or counting the holes.
