- 1Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:5 A pipe connecter comprising a nipple, an annular flange carried at an appropriate point in.the length of the nipple and extended horizontally thereof to abut the adjacent end of a pipe section carried upon the nip 10 pie, a supporting arm carried by and rigidly connected with the outer surface of the flange and projecting therefrom in spaced parallelism to the adjacent Avail of the nipple, and a split clamping band horizontally ie arranged about the nipple parallel with the flange and having connection at one end thereof with the outermost projecting end of the supporting arm whereby the aforementioned end of a pipe section may be 20 rigidly retained upon the nipple and the portion thereof unengaged by the clamping band may swell circumferentially of the nipple and between the space between the latter and said arm. 25 In testimony whereof I affix my signature. Application filed August 28,
This invention has particular relation to combined couplings and clamps, primarily applicable for associating a tubular body with a coupling and for retaining the body 5 against displacement thereon.
Another object comprehends adjustable clamping members carried by and disposed at remote points from an enlarged portion for firmly holding the body upon the nipple. 10 More specifically stated the couplings embody a nipple carrying an enlarged portion which serves as an abutment for the meeting ends of the tubular bodies. _ j 7 _
With the above and other objects in view, X5 the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention partly broken away to illustrate the application thereof.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3’is a transverse section taken on line3—3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of a modified form of the invention and illustrating the construction and application of 30 the clamping members and of a stop cock used in conjunction therewith.
Figure 5 is an elevation of another modification of the invention.
Ref erring to the drawing in detail, where35 in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a coupling nipple provided with beads 11 extending circumferentially thereof upon its outer surface and disposed at 40 spaced intervals thereon. An enlarged outwardly extending annular flange portion or abutment 12 is formed at an intermediate point in the length of the nipple.
The broken or adjacent ends of the tubu45 lar body portions, such as the lawn hose, receive those portions of the nipple upon the opposed sides of the flange 12. Supporting arms 13 carried by and extending in opposite directions from the flange 12 support 50 split clamping bands 14 upon the ends there1826. Serial No. 132,156.
of. Said bands form at the splits thereof spaced parallel apertured ears 15 which are adapted to receive therein fastening elements, in the form of bolts 16. Said bands when regulated by the bolts 16 will compress 55 the tubular body portions upon the beads 11 carried upon the outer surface of the nipple 10 to retain said bodies against displacement. The flange 12 serves as an abutment for the meeting or adjacent ends of the tubular eo bodies to prevent the peripheries thereof from flaring and tearing.
In Figure 4 of the drawing the preferred form of the invention is disclosed in operative use; the difference and departure incor- 65 porated therewith, as embodying the modification is in the nature of a bore 13' communicating the bore of the nipple 10 through the flange 12. Said bore 13' is interiorly . threaded to receive the reduced and threaded 70 attaching end of a stop or pet cock 132. . Said cock will permit tapping in on a line for auxiliary use or may effectively serve as a relief when a leak.is discovered in the line.
In . Figure 5 of the drawing I have illus- 75 trated a modified form of the invention comprehending an apertured disk 17 within which a threaded sleeve 18 is mounted and held against displacement by a jam nut 19 carried thereby. Said sleeve 18 is adapted 80 for connection with an air. appliance commonly used in the inflation of pneumatic tires. A supporting arm 20 extends from... the apertured disk on the periphery thereof and at right angles thereto. A split clamp- 85 . ing band 21 is carried upon the remaining end of the supporting arm 20 and which is adapted to receive therethrough a terminal end -of the tubular body for retaining the same against displacement in a manner sim- 90 ilar to that as mentioned in the foregoing . description and accompanying drawing relative to the preferred form of the invention. A similar fastening device is also employed' for use in connection with the clamping 95 band 21.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor, details of construction, and the right is here- . in reserved to make such changes as proper- 100
