Overalls with detachable pockets

My invention relates to apparel, and more especially to a pair of workman’s overalls having pockets detachable to permit replacement when the pockets have become unduly g worn.

Generally, the place at which a pair of workman’s overalls first wears out, is at one or more of the pockets, due to the fact that this is the part of the garment given the I;) most and hardest use. Especially true is this in respect to carpenters’ overalls which are usually provided with a large nail-pocket extending across the front of the bib. Heretofore, it has generally been necessary to disjrj card a suit of such overalls when the nailpocket has been worn out, but while the rest of the garment is still capable of giving a considerable amount of service, and replace the entire garment.

It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a garment having pockets readily detachable, to permit replacement when the pockets have been rendered unserviceable due to excessive wear, but while the remain25 der of the garment is still in sufficiently good condition to warrant such replacement.

It is a further object to provide means of attachment for the pockets, which will impart a neat, finished appearance to the gart o ment, and which will not leave any undesirable gaps between the garment and the pocket into which nails or tools might be inadvertently dropped.

With the foregoing and other objects in 33 view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the inven40 tion wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a suit of carpenters’ overalls embodying my invention. Parts are broken away to better reveal the means of attachment.

Jleferring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, Figures 1 and 55 2 show a suit of overalls embodying one form of- my invention and comprising a bib 6, legs 7 and 8, and adjustable shoulder straps 9 and 11. The overalls are provided with a large nail-pocket 12 extending across the so front of the bib and which may have a supplementary pocket 13 secured to the front thereof. These pockets may be divided into a plurality; of smaller compartments as by the rows of stitches 14, and as shown in Fig- ss ure 3. Hip pockets 16 and leg pockets 17 and 18 may also be provided.

Due to the fact that the constructural details of each of the pockets are substantially the same, it will suffice to describe one pocket <0 only, with the understanding that the others arc of similar nature. For this purpose, consider the large nail-pocket 12. As shown in. Figure 4, this nail-pocket comprises a backing strip 21 to which the front strip 22 ij is secured in: any convenient manner, as by the: row of stitches 23. Preferably, the upper edge 24 of the badging strip is extended above the front strip, and a plurality of loops or eyes 26 of conventional design, are se- 00 cured to the outer surface thereof adjacent this edge.iMl -Ji: ;

Means for removably attaching the pocket to. the garment are provided by a strip 27 of suitable material, preferably the same fabric 35 as that of’ which, the garment proper is constructed. This strip is secured to the garment in suitable position as bythe rows of stitches; 28, preferably adjacent the lower edge 29 of the strip. The upper edge 31 of the strip 00 is then reversed, forming a dependent flap. Preferably, to the inner surface of the flap, is secured a plurality of hooks 32 suitably positioned to engage the eyes on the pocket.

It is thus seen that a pocket is provided, 95 having ready means of attaching to, or detaching from the garment, to permit replacement whenever desirable ; and that the means of attachment are of such nature that the

2«. 1,764,483 covered by the flap 31 so that it is impossible for the wearer to inadvertently drop nails or tools into any gap between the backing strip and the garment. This flap also serves ₅ to impart to the garment a neat, finished appearance.

In order to prevent the pocket from flopping due to-the movements of; the wearer, and to retain it upon the hooks by which it ₁₀ is secured to the garment, fasteners 33 (which may be of a type commonly used as glove fasteners) may be utilized adjacent·the lower edge of the pocket member.

I am aware that the detachable pocket of my invention may be used with articles of apparebother than overalls, and other means , of attachment may be employed than the common hooks and eyes described..
