Garment pocket

This invention relates to improvements in garment pockets and more particularly to a novel construction of the pocket of any garment in which money, papers, or other valuable articles are to be carried.

The ordinary garment pocket, as is well known, has its mouth formed of a width equal to if not greater than the interior of the pocket and such pockets, and particularly trouser pockets, are formed relatively wide from top to bottom. As a consequence, pickpockets experience little difficulty in surreptitiously removing the contents of such pockets and therefore the present invention has as its primary object to provide a pocket so constructed that any effort toward surreptitious removal of the contents of the pocket will apprise the wearer of the garment equipped with the same, of the attempt at removal of the contents of the pocket and enable him to frustrate the attempt at robbery.

Another object of the invention is to provide a garment pocket with novel means for restricting the pocket near the mouth thereof and in such a manner that, while the wearer of the garment equipped with the pocket may readily insert his hand into the pocket for the purpose of withdrawing any part or all of the contents thereof, any attempt on the part of anyone else to surreptitiously remove the contents will be interfered with to such an extent as to afford ample warning. to the wearer· of the garment and thus give him opportunity to frustrate the attempts of the pickpocket.

Another object of the invention is to provide. in connection with a garment pocket intended to receive and contain valuables, an elastic means for restricting the pocket near the mouth thereof which elastic means will be sufficiently yieldable and distensible to permit of the insertion and withdrawal of the hand of the wearer of the garment equipped with the pocket without any difficulty but will prevent a pickpocket inserting his hand with the facility with which this act is done in the case of ordinary pockets.

While the accompanying drawings and the description which is to follow, constitute a disclosure of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed.

The restricting means embodying the invention is applicable to the pockets of any garment where the pocket or pockets may be employed to receive and contain valuables, ¢5 and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing, the pocket, which is indicated by the reference numeral 1, is a trousers pocket and is united at its mouth as at 2, in the usual manner, to the inner side 70 of the trousers below the waist band and at either side thereof, the restricting means being applicable to either the right or left hand pocket or to either of the hip pockets, in this particular embodiment of the invention. 75

The restricting means comprises an endless band 3 of elastic, the normal diameter of which band is somewhat less than the normal width of the pocket near the mouth thereof. This band is of the ordinary elastic material so and may either be manufactured in the integral form illustrated in the drawing or produced by cutting a suitable length of the material and uniting the ends of the length by stitching or otherwise. The band is disposed 85 to surround the pocket 1 near the mouth 2 thereof and, at suitable intervals in the circumference of the band, the wall of the pocket 1 is united thereto by transverse lines of stitching 4 or in any other suitable manner. 90 As stated above the band 3 is of a diameter less than the normal width of the pocket 1 near the mouth thereof, and therefore, in arranging the band about the pocket, the walls of the pocket will be puckered between the 95 stitches 4, as indicated by the numeral 5.

From the foregoing description of the invention it will be evident that the one wearing the garment equipped with the pocket may readily insert his hand into the pocket and 100

1,743,045 remove part or all of the contents without experiencing any difficulty, but it will be quite obvious that if a pickpocket attempts to insert his hand into the pocket, being unaware of the presence of the restricting ⁶ means, the wearer of the garment will be immediately apprised of his attempts and take necessary steps to frustrate the same. Furthermore, the pickpocket attempting to re10 move the contents from a pocket constructed ^υ in accordance with the invention will be immediately discouraged in his attempts as he will determine, at the moment he attempts to insert his hand into the pocket, that the pocket 15 is not of the ordinary construction and is one which cannot be readily entered.

Preferably, in carrying out the invention, a relatively strong or reinforced cloth will be employed in making the pocket, and the seam _w 2 which units the mouth of the pocket to the trousers will be preferably reenforced by a binding or otherwise so that there will be no likelihood of multilation of the pocket or tearing of the same from the trousers.
