In a sound reproducing apparatus, a conical shaped diaphragm, an actuation means, for said diaphragm operating to support said diaphragm at its apex, a plate member apertured to enclose the free peripheral edge of 30 said conical shaped diaphragm, and a plurality of diametrically opposed strip members secured to the peripheral edge of said sound reproducing diaphragm and serving to center said diaphragm within said plate 35 member. 4. In a sound reproducing apparatus, a conical shaped diaphragm, an actuating means supporting said diaphragm at its apex, a plate member apertured to enclose the free 40 peripheral edge of. said conical shaped diaphragm, and a plurality of elongated strip members extending between separated points along the rear surface of said sound reproducing diaphragm and attached to said plate 45 member for centering said diaphragm with respect to said apertured plate member. 5. In a sound reproducing apparatus, a cone shaped diaphragm having an elliptical periphery,'an actuating means for said dia50 phragm, said, diaphragm being supported at its apex by said actuating means, a plate member apertured to enclose the free peripheral edge of said cone shaped diaphragm, a pair of strip members secured to the edge of said 55 sound reproducing apparatus along the minor axis thereof and a separate pair of strip members secured to the peripheral, edge of said sound reproducing apparatus along the major axis thereof, said strip members being 60 attached to said plate whereby the peripheral edge of said cone shaped diaphragm is centered within said apertured plate and positively spaced therefrom. . 6. In a. sound reproducing apparatus, the 65 combination of a vibratile device, a cone-

Application filed. October 6,
My invention relates broadly to sound reproducing .diaphragms and more particularly to a conical shaped sound reproducing diaphragm.
e One of the objects of my invention is to provide a mounting for a conical shaped sound reproducing diaphragm whereby the diaphragm is supported at the apex with the edge thereof substantially unconfined for 10 vibration.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for mounting a conical shaped - sound reproducing diaphragm where the peripheral edge of the diaphragm is substan15 tially floating, the vibrations being imparted to the diaphragm at the apex thereof with means;for preventing injury to the free edge of the diaphragm.
My invention will be more clearly under20 stood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sound reproducer embodying the principles of my 25 invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sound reproducer of my invention with the diaphragm partially broken away and .shown in cross-section for more clearly illustrating the nature of my invention; Fig. 3 is a detail en30 larged sectional view illustrating the devices which I may employ for protecting the edge of the cone; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation illustrating the actuating link which extends between the cone and the driver and showing 35 the support for the driver.
My invention has been illustrated as applied to a cone speaker having an elliptically shaped sound reproducing diaphragm which is substantially unconfined at its edge and 40 is supported from its apex at which point vibrations are impressed upon the diaphragm from the driver. In order to protect the free edge of the diaphragm I provide diametrically opposed strip members for centering 45 the diaphragm within a suitably apertured plate member. The strip members are composed of soft material which do not function ' . in the sound reproducing process but serve merely as centering means for maintaining 50 the conical shaped diaphragm in position

with.respect to the centering plate. The diaphragm is then free to vibrate and is sub- stantially unconfined at its edge, vibratory movement being imparted to the diaphragm solely from the apex thereof. · . r
Referring to the drawings in more detail, 65 reference character 1 represents a base member on which a vertical plate 2 is mounted. The vertical plate 2 is apertured as represented at 3 in a shape conforming with the contour of the peripheral edge of the sound reproducing diaphragm. An electromagnetic driver has been represented at 4 which is supported in spaced relation to the plate 2 by any suitable means, such as arm members 6g 5 connected to support 19. The sound reproducing diaphragm is illustrated at 6 as consisting of an elliptically shaped surface in the form of a cone supported from its apex ’ 7 by means of an actuating link 20 which 70 extends from the electromagnetic driver 4. The peripheral edge 8 of the sound reproducing diaphragm is free to vibrate and is centered with respect to the plate 2 within the aperture 3 by means of the soft strips 9, 10, -5 11 and 12. The strips 9, 10, 11 and 12 may be of rubber or felt or other flexible or resilient material which has no properties for the reproduction of sound. The strips are attached by means of a layer of glue or suitable g0 cement 16 to the edge of the cone and at the opposite end the strips are attached by a similar layer of adhesive 15 to the edge of the plate 2. The strips serve to center the diaphragm within the aperture 3 in the plate 2, leaving 8g an annular gap 14 between the free edge of the cone 8 and the inner wall of the aperture .3. The edge of the cone terminates substantially in the plane of the plate 2.
While I have described my invention in a 00 certain preferred embodiment, I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claims. 95
