Garbage pail with nondetachable cover

My invention relates to a receptacle that is especially designed for receiving garbage or other refuse and the principal object of my invention is to provide the receptacle 5 with a non-detacb.able cover, thereby preventing said cover from becoming lost or mislaid when the receptacle is being handled by the garbage collector.

Further objects of my invention are, to JO rigidly connect the receptacle cover and the bail or handle, thereby greatly facilitating the manipulation of the cover when the¹ same is placed upon or removed from the receptacle, and to provide simple and efficient means 15 whereby the cover may be locked or secured in closed position upon the receptacle.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of 20 parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates a pail-like receptacle that is preferably formed of sheet ⁴⁰ metal and secured to the upper portion of the outer surface thereon and at diametrically opposite points are bail or handle attaching ears of the form illustrated in Fig. 6. Each ear comprises a base portion 11, a body ⁴⁵ portion 12 that projects upwardly and outwardly from said base portion and a head portion 13, the ends of which latter extend beyond the sides of said body portion 12.

A cover 14, preferably formed of sheet ⁶⁰ metal has a depending marginal flange 15 that is adapted to surround the upper portion of the body of receptacle 10, and extending diametrically across the top of this cover is a metal strap 16 that forms the com66 bined cover, handle and bail.

tended upward to form a convenient handle 17 that may be readily grasped by the hand and those portions of the strap adjacent to the ends of this handle may be rigidly se- co cured to cover 14 in any suitable manner, preferably by rivets such as 18.

From the edges of cover 14, the end portions of strap 16 are extended, downward to form bail members 19 that are provided with 65 longitudinally disposed slots 20 for the reception of the body portions 12 of the ears that are secured to receptacle body 10.

Thus, when the parts are properly assembled, the engagement of the ears through 70 the slots 20 in bail members 19 enables cover 14 to be raised or lowered for a distance corresponding to the length of the slots 20 and this movement permits the cover to be swung to either side as shown in Fig. 3, when 75 garbage or the like is deposited in or discharged from the receptacle.

Formed in each bail member 19 to the side of the slot 20 therein is a notch 21 and when the cover is in proper closed position upon ⁸⁰the receptacle, these notches occupy positions directly opposite to the arms 12 of the ears.

Thus, when the cover is closed and it is desired to lock or secure said cover in position, handle 17 is manually engaged and a ⁸⁸slight rotary movement imparted to said cover, thereby engaging arms 12 in the notches 21. (See Figs. 4 and 5.)

Thus the cover is secured in closed position and the receptacle may be, lifted and ⁸⁰carried with the cover in closed position thereon.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided a simple, practical and convenient receptacle that is particularly adapted for receiving ⁸⁵garbage and like refuse and which receptacle is provided with a cover that cannot be detached from said receptacle and mislaid or lost.

Obviously, minor changes in the size, form ¹⁰⁰and construction of the various parts of my improved garbage receptacle may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit · of the invention, the scope of which is set¹⁰⁵forth in the appended claim.
