the head band of the crown to be made 55 larger or smaller.

In Figs. 1-4 of the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the crown of the cap, the lower edge portion thereof constituting the head band 2. The head band is reinforced inte- 60 riorly with a stiffening tape 3 of suitable strong material. At the front of the cap, the head band portion of the crown is split as at 4, and is provided with any suitable adjustment means such as straps 5 and 6, of 65 suitable material such as flexible leather, and a buckle 7. The buckle 7 may be engaged in any of the perforations 8 of the strap 5 to regulate the width of the opening 4 and consequently adjust the size of I the head 70 band 2 of the cap. It is, of course, obvious that any other suitable form of adjustment means could be substituted for that shown.

A lining 20 is positioned within the crown 1. This lining may cover the entire inside 75 of the crown, as illustrated, or may extend only Avithin the* head band portion. The lower edge 21 of the lining 20 may be secured to the head band, by stitching or other suitable means, at the back and along 80 the sides as far · front as the points designated A, in Figs. 3: and 4 of the drawing, which points are spaced from the ends of the visor. Forwardly of the points A the lining is left free of the crown. 85

The visor 40 is preferably of the type usually employed in ordinary caps, and consists of a piece of relatively stiff material 41 of substantial thickness, covered by fabric 42 similar to that of the crown 1. The edges 90 of the covering fabric 42, along the inner edge of the Ausor, are preferably extended as at 43, and to these edges is secured the front part 22 of the lower edge 21 of the lining 20. 95

The points designated B indicate the ex- tremities of the attachment of the lining to the visor. It is to be noted that these points B are spaced from the points A, and that, between these points, the lower edge of 100 the lining is capable of wrinkling, or folding, or straightening out according to whether the cap is adjusted to a small or large head size. . This wrinkling or folding of the lining is entirely Avithin the cap and 105 not exposed to view when the cap is being worn. The portions of the lining between the points A and B are designated by nuThis invention relates to headgear of the type commonly called caps and has for an object the provision of a cap which may be altered in size.

β Another object of this invention is to provide a cap which may be readily adjusted to fit the wearer, but which is strong and durable and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Another object of the invention is to so place the adjustment means that no part of it will be exposed to view when the cap is being worn, although it is readily accessible in case it is desired to change the size of the ¹⁸ cap. . .

A further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable-size cap which may be adjusted to any head size without causing wrinkling or puckering of the outer 20 casing so that its construction may be used in the better grades of caps without detracting from a stylish appearance.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from a consideration of the de25 tailed description and drawings of headgear embodying the invention.

The improved cap consists mainly of three parts, a crown, a lining, and a visor. The lower edge of the crown constitutes the ef56 fective head band, and is formed with an adjustable opening at the front to permit adjustment of the head band. The visor maybe attached to the lining but is movably associated with the crown in order to allow

1,652,145 meral 23. These portions of the lining constitute flexible connections between the ends of the visor and the head band.

A sweat band 44 may be attached to the 5 inner edge of the visor, if desired.

Secured to the extensions 43 of the visor covering and positioned between the lining and the material of the crown is a flap 45, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,. preferably 10 of the same material as the crown 1. This flap is positioned at the front of the cap, and underlies the opening 4 of the crown. . Secured to the extensions 43 of the covering of the visor, as by spaced rivets 46, is a 15 flexible guide strip 47 of any suitable material, such as celluloid. This guide strip is not essential in the construction of this improvement, the broad concept being entirely independent of this feature. In the 20 form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the guide strip may be employed : to good advantage to provide a guideway for the front part of the lower portion of the . crown. Along the inside of this portion of 25 the crown are formed spaced loops 48 which encircle the guide strip 47 between the spaced rivets 46. The head band is not otherwise attached to the inner edge of the visor, thereby permitting the head band to be ³⁰ moved relative to the visor in adjusting the size of the cap.

The portion of the crown 1 that overhangs the visor and the visor are preferably provided with some means, such as the usual ³⁵ knob 49 and resilient socket 50, for detachably securing the two together.

The embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, is different from the above described embodiment principally in 40 that it eliminates the use of a guide strip for the front portion of the head band. In this embodiment a lining 20' is secured within a crown 1' in the same manner as in the first embodiment, the extremities of 45 this attachment being indicated by A', in Fig. 6. A visor 40', similar to that before described, is attached to the lower edge of the front of the lining, the ends of the visor being spaced from the points A'. Flexible 00 connections are thereby provided between the ends of the visor and the head band. An opening 4' is provided in the front of the crown 1', and means, such as straps 5' and 6' and buckle 7', is provided for adjusting 05 the size of the cap.

Underlying the material of the crown at the front of the cap, and secured to the inner edge of the visor is a flap 45', shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, which extends the >io entire width of the visor.

The front of the head band, being unattached to the visor, can move relatively thereto in adjusting the size of the cap.

A loop 9 may be attached to the inner «»5 edge of the visor for the purpose of encircling the strap 5' to keep it close to the visor. Some means such as the knob 49' and resilient socket 50' may be provided for detachably securing the overhanging portion of the crown to the visor. ^: A <o

It is readily apparei.it in both of the above described embodiments that when the opening at the front of the :crown is drawn together, the effective head size of the cap becomes smaller. When the width of said 75 opening is increased-the head, size of the cap becomes larger.

It is apparent, that no matter how the cap may be adjusted, no wrinkling of the outer casing of the crown will occur.. Further- 80 more, the adjustment means being, located at the front of the cap. and covered by the overhanging part of the crown, when , the cap is being worn, there will be nothing to indicate to an; observer that the cap . is ad- ,85 justable. The cap will I here fore present the same stylish appearance :is a non-adjustable cap of like quality.
