... This invention- relates to steps for telephone or other, poles, and more particularly to steps of the detachable type.

One of the objects of the invention is the 5 provision of a. pole-step that may be readily inserted in and. removed from a base-plate which may be permanently secured to a pole, and to form the base-plate ,so. that it cannot. be used by unauthorized persons 10 for climbing the pole when the pole-step is removed.

This and further, objects of. the invention will be apparent from the following description, when considered in connection 15 with the accompanying drawing, in. which one embodiment thereof is illustrated.:

In the drawing, Figure 1 illustrates a pole having a base-plate secured thereto, with the detachable step in position ; Fig20 2 is a front view of the. base-plate, lying in a horizontal position; Fig, 3 is a view of the step which is adapted to be attachably positioned in the base-plate, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the step taken on the 25 line 4—4 of Fig. 3.

The upper vertical portion 35 11 of the base-plate 6 rests flatly against the . surface of the pole 5 for a sufficient distance to permit, the seating of the flat inner surface of the head of the bolt or screw 7. The plate 6 is bent slightly at this point so 40 that, the portion 12 extends outwardly therefrom in a sloping direction to a lateral shoulder, which projects horizontally from the lower vertical portion 13. The portion 13 is formed similar to the portion 11 of 45 the plate 6, and likewise rests,flatly against the pole 5 tor a sufficient distance to permit the seating of the flat surface of the head of the bolt or screw 8.

In the application of the step 16 to the base-plate 6, the end of the step having the 60 cutaway portions is inserted in the circular opening 14, said end extending into , a chain- . ber 18, which is provided between,the pole 5 and the declined portion 12 of the plate 6.' When the step is, inserted a sufficient 65 distance, it . is turned so /that itscutaway portions 17 are in alinement with the edges of the slot 15, after which the step is pressed downwardly in said slot until one of the rounded surface portions formed between --70 the cutaway portions 17 is seated in the rounded portion at the bottom of the slot j 15. The width of the slot 15 is slightly ⁴greater than the; thickness of the portion formed between the cutaway portions 17 of. 75the step. 16 so that the step is readily .permitted to enter and register securely within the. slot, in such manner as not to. become displaced when subjected to the weight of a person climbing the- pole. As the portion So 12 of the base-plate is. declined, the step T 16 when positioned in the. slot 15 will be slightly tilted upwards or at an inclined position,to prevent the lineman’s foot from slipping off the end of the step, and will ⁸³afford, perfect security to the foot in climbing or while standing on the step.

- It will be seen that the step is of small dimension and a number of these steps may be readily Carried about and used upon dif- ^!!nferent poles. In. attaching the steps for the purpose of climbing poles, it is only necessary to attach the step to the base-plate as previously described, and: in descending the operator may withdraw the steps, from the *)5 permanently positioned base-plates. After the steps have been removed from the. baseplate there will be no means afforded'for the , /. climbing of the poles by un authorized persons,.as the foot would slip off the base-plate W in any attempt to rest it thereon.

It will be obvious from the foregoing description that, by means, of this invention,' the carrying of ladders or the use of climbing irons by linemen for the purpose of ¹⁰³reaching the lowest permanent step of a pole, which is usually some considerable distance from the ground, will be eliminated.
