Application filed October 31, 1924. Serial No. 747,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lee D. Gibson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State 5 of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks, and is an improvement over the construction shown in 10 my copending application, Serial No. 725,640, filed July 12, 1924.
An object of the invention is the provision of a padlock having a pair of plungers adapted to engage the hasp of the lock.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock construction in which the lock casing is provided with a number of compartments, the plungers arranged in one compartment and the key adapted to be 20 received in another compartment whereby opening of the lock by jimmying the key is prevented.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock in which the locking 25 plungers are actuated by a pair of pivoted dogs and are retained in locked position by a locking member, the dogs and the locking member being controlled by a single key.
In the accompanying drawings, I have 30 shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock, parts being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on 33 line 2-^-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a similar view on line 3—3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar view on line 4—4 of Figure 1, 40 Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view on line 5—5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a detail view of portions of the lock disassembled, and,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the piv: 43 oted dogs.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates generally a lock casing which may be of any desired form and which is shown rectangular. The casing is 30 formed of a block of metal which is cut out to form the various compartments of the lock and to provide partition walls separating the compartments. As shown, the casing is provided with a wall 2 parallel to 33 one side, and spaced a slight distance therefrom., forming a r.hAmbpr 3 for the reception of one arm of the hasp. It is further provided with a transverse partition 4, forming a compartment 5 for the reception of the key and the key mechanism. Above 60 the partition 4, there is provided a compartment 6, which is separated from an upper compartment by means of a transverse wall 7. The compartment 5 is spaced from the hasp chamber by means of a vertical wall 65 8 extending from the bottom of the lock casing to the partition wall 4 and a casing 9 is arranged within this space. After the various parts of the lock have been assembled in the casing, a plate 10 is arranged 70 over the open face of the casing and immovably secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by welding or the like.
The lock is adapted to receive a hasp 10 which is formed U-shaped in the· usual man- 73 ner and one arm 12 thereof is elongated and extends into the chamber 3 to a point adjacent the bottom of the lock casing. The other arm 13 is shorter and is adapted to barely enter the top of the lock casing when 80 in locked position. The long arm 12 is provided with a reduced lower end 14, and a coil spring 15 is arranged around this reduced portion in the bottom of the chamber 3 and is adapted to project the hasp 85 when the lock is released. As shown, a knob 16 may be formed in the bottom of the chamber 3 and receive the end of the spring to guide it. In Figure 1 it will be seen that the casing 1 is extended up into the curve 90 of the hasp 11 at la and leaving an opening 2a for a staple or the like to fasten the lock to the article to be secured. The purpose of this extension is to prevent the prying _ of the lock by inserting a 95 pointed instrument between the hasp and the casing. The arms of the hasp are provided with substantially V-shaped notches or recesses 17 in alinement with each other and these recesses are adapted to receive the 100 ends of locking plungers 18, which retain the lock in closed position. As shown, the plungers are arranged in a compartment formed between the top of the lock casing and the partition wall 7. A coil spring 19 ιθ3 is arranged between the plungers and normally forces them outwardly.
The plungers are adapted to be actuated by means of a pair of pivoted dogs 20 which are arranged in the compartment 6 and are 110 piyota’ly mounted on pins 21 which are received in a ’ran«verso rib 22, The upper
1,566,473 draws the locking plungers 18 from the recesses 17 in the hasp and places the spring 19 under tension. The spring 15 then projects the hasp and when the short arm 13 is and the lock is unlocked. When turned through a complete half and withdrawn from the cylin15 ends of these pins extend through an elongated slot in the wall 7 and are received in notches 23 formed in the lower face of the locking plungers. These dogs are adapted to be actuated by a earn 24 arranged on the end of a rod 25, which extends through the partition 4. The rod 25 is carried, by a cylinder 2G, the lower end of which is provided with an enlargement 27 abutting the inner side of the bottom of the lock casing.. The lock casing is provided with an opening in alinement with the cylinder, and a tubular spacing member 28 is secured to the cylinder aid extends through this opening. Exteriorly of the casing, the tubular spacing member is provided with an enlargement 29 similar to the enlargement 27. The cylinder is provided with a groove 30 which, as shown, may be spirally arranged and is 1 adapted to receive a key 31 which is twisted to fit in this groove. The partition .8, which forms one of the walls of the casing 9, is provided with spaced cut out portions or notches 32. A locking plunger 33 is ar> ranged within this casing ancl is normally forced outwardly by means of a spring 34. This plunger is provided with a pair of grooves 35fin the face adjacent the wall 8 P , , .·= , « and these grooves extend across the face minor locking plungers therein, a spiral key of the plunger at an angle (see Figure 5).
The key 31 is provided with ribs or extensions -36 which are adapted to pass through the notches 32 and enter the grooves 35. The locking plunger is provided with an extension 37 which is reduced in cross section and extends through the compartment 6. The partition 7 is provided with an opening through which the end of the locking plunger 33 is adapted to pass and the locking plunger 18 is provided with a slot or notch 38 in alinement therewith when the plunger is in operative position to receive the end of the plunger 33. Adjacent the there is provided an ena shoulder 39, which is with the lower face of projected, it is arranged above ihe top of 70 ihe'casino· and the lock is unlocked. When revolution der, the parts are ready to assume an operative position and as soon as the hasp is 79 forced home, the spring 19 returns the locking plungers 18 to their operative position. At’ the same time, the locking member 33 is forced upwardly by the spring 34 and when the plungers 18 -assume their opera- 80 rive position, the upper end of the member 33 enters the notch 38.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and .described is'to be taken as a preferred example of the 85 same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. 88
