To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Charles C. Pfeiffer, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westfield, county of Union, and State 5 of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doors and par10 ticularly to fireproof doors of the type in which a wooden core or body is covered with a metallic sheathing.
The invention has for its salient object to provide a door construction of the type 15 specified that will be strong and serviceable and can be manufactured at a minimum labor cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door structure having' the metallic <sup>20</sup> covering so mounted and secured over the core or body that the several parts of the covering or sheathing can be easily and readily connected together and will be securely held in position;

The invention briefly described consists 65 of a door comprising a wooden core or body, . the body being covered by a metallic sheathing. The sheathing is formed of several sections which are bent to shape and are then superimposed on the body, the various 70 parts or,, sections of the sheathing being joined together and certain of the joints between the sheathing sections overlapping and: bridging joints between the body portions. The details of the various joints have 75 been worked out in a novel manner and will be clear from the. following description.
The invention may be utilized in connection with any desired form of door but in. the drawings the door is illustrated as hav- 80 ing stiles 20, end rails. 21 and an intermediate rail 22.
The stiles 20 as shown particularly in Fig. 8 are recessed at 23 at their ends. The ends 24 of the rails .21 fit in the recesses 23 and 85 these ends 24 are in turn recessed as shown at 25. Additional cross members 26 are secured to the rail and to the stiles and these, cross members have grooves 27 formed therein alined with the recessed portions 24 00 of the rails 21, The members 26 also have: longitudinal grooves 28 formed therein.
The various parts of the door body may be secured together in any desired manner as by fasteners 30 and attention is called to 85 the fact that the stiles 20 and cross, members 26 are secured to each other at 31. The stiles 20 and rails 21 are secured together at 32 and the members 26 and rails 21 are secured together at 33. . _ 100
The metallic, sheathing for the stiles: is shown in Fig. 11 and comprises a hollow rectangular sheath 35 having flanges 36 extending inwardly therefrom. The ends of the sheaths 35 are cut away and portions of 105 these ends are folded inwardly' or back on
1,659,983 themselves as shown at 37, these portions forming channels for a purpose hereinafterset forth. The longitudinal ends of the sheath have formed thereon extensions 38 5 adapted to be folded over the outer edge portions of the members 26 and into the grooves 28 as hereinafter explained.
The sheathing for the rails 21 is illus: trated particularly in Fig. 12 and comprises ii.irectangnlaf hollow sheath 40 havingflanges 41 and at its ends inwardly folded portions 42 (see Figs. 7 and 10). The portions 42 also form channels for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The Avail 43 of the 15 sheath 40 is recessed or cut away as shown at 44 to provide for the insertion of the connecting member which connects together the sheath 40 and the sheath 35. The wall 43 also lias extensions 45, one at each end there20 of for reasons hereinafter set forth.
The metallic covering for the door is mounted thereon in the folloAving manner. The sheaths 35 and 40 are spread or opened sufficiently to permit their being placed over 25 the stiles and rails of the door. Referring particularly to Fig. 10 it will be seen that one of the sheaths 35 has been mounted on a stile and that the inturned portions 37 thereof are disposed in the recess 25 of the 30 rail 21 and in the groove 27 of the member 26. The sheath 40 has also been mounted over the rail 21 and member 26 and has its inturned .portions 42 disposed in the recess 25 and groove 27. The connector illustrated 35 particularly in Fig. 13 is used to connect together the sheath 35 and sheath 40. This connector comprises a piece of material having its ends 50 folded over toward each other but spaced apart as shown at 51. · There 40 are thus formed channels 52 and 53 betAveen the portions 50 and the main or body portion 54 of the connector. This connector is then inserted in the slot 44 formed in the Avail 43 of the sheath 40 and secures together 45 the portion 37 of the sheath 35 and the portion 42 of the sheath 40. It will be understood that connectors are used at both sides of the sheath as clearly illustrated in Fig. 10.
When the sheaths have been so mounted •’° the portions 45 of the sheath 40 are forced nto the groove 28 of the member 26 as shoAvn particularly in Fig. 5. The portions 38 of the sheath 35 are then bent back upon themselves and forced into the channel 55 formed 55 in the extension 45.
Panels 60 may be secured in any desired manner and one method of securing the panels is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 14. In Fig. 6 the panels are shown as having a 1,0 Avooden core 61 having a metallic covering 62, the two ends of the covering being extended beypnd the -core and placed in j-uxta. posed position .with reference to the flanges 41 of the shea-th 40. These metallic flanges 63 and extensions can then be secured·· together in any desired manner by spot Avelding and if desired, for ornamental purposes, fillers 63 can be secured in the corners between the rails and stiles and the panels.
Particular attention is. directed to the 70 means for securing The adj acent portions of the rail sheaths and the stile sheaths as shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10. From these figures it will be seen that the connections, between the sheaths overlap the connections 75 betAveen the rail and stile thereby increasing the rigidity and ruggedness of the construction, and furthermore by reason of the various oi'erlapping parts the joints are made much more firm and effective. It will be 80 understood that the exposed joints such as the connections between the connector and the inturned portions of the sheaths will be filled in Avith lead, solder or other suitable material so that in the finished door no 85 joints will be seen.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that 80 changes in the. construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made Avithout departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as expressed in the folloAving claims. 88
