Magazine feeding device

Be it known that I, Matteo Fererro, a citizen of Italy, residing at Raton, in the county of Colfax and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to rifles, having more particular reference to magazine rifles, the invention having for an object the provision of an improved magazine of increased capacity.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 of the drawing is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view showing my invention applied to a rifle.

Referring to the drawing the reference numeral 10 indicates a portion of the barrel of a rifle, and 11 a portion of the stock. Under the breech of the rifle is secured a magazine casing 12 which is of sufficient width to accommodate two piles or strings of cartridges. The top of this casing is open and leads into the usual cut out 14 in the barrel through which the cartridges pass upward to register with the bore 15 of the barrel, it being understood that any sort of breech mechanism may be used. The bottom of the magazine casing is closed by means of a door 17 hinged at its rear end to the rear end of the casing as at 18, and held closed by a snap bolt 19.

The cartridges are placed, prior to insertion in the magazine, in a compound clip having two compartments arranged side by side and each adapted to hold a string of cartridges, the wall of one of the compartments, which compartment is in vertical registry with the passage when the clip is first inserted in the magazine, being collapsible. This cartridge clip comprises a rectangular member 22 of a proper size to frictionally grip the cartridges that are inserted therein, and having a pair of triangular end plates 23 projected from one side thereof, these end plates being lateral continuations of the end walls of the said member, with their bases flush with the bottom of the clip. To these end plates 23, at the bottom thereof, is hinged a wall plate 25 which is nor- 60 mally urged, toward the member 22i5y means of a spring or springs 26 coiled around the hinge pintle of the plate in a well known manner. A second string of cartridges is carried between the plate 25 and the mem- 65 ber 22, being friction ally gripped by the said plate. To assist in holding the cartridges in position in the clip spring fingers 27 may be secured to the opposite faces of one wall of member 22 to bear on the indi- 70 vidual cartridges.

The cartridges are fed upward by means of followers 28 on springs 29 carried on the door 17 in position to engage the bottom cartridges in the respective clip com- 75 partments. Attached to these followers are cords 30 which extend downward through suitable apertures in the springs 29 and the door 17 whereby the said followers can be pulled downward when desired. Fixed to 80 the side of the magazine 12 is a flat spring 32 which is adapted to bear on the clip member 22 and urge the latter in a direction to bring the cartridges therein into registry with the passage 14 for delivery to 85 the bore of the rifle. Upward movement of the clip in the magazine is limited by means of a shoulder 35 against which the upper edge of the clip bears, a spring 36 being carried by the rear wall of the maga- on zine and bearing forwardly on the clip to hold it in contact with the said shoulder.

When the magazine is to be filled the rifle is inverted to bring the door 17 facing upward. This door is then opened and a clip 95 with a double row or string of cartridges is placed in the magazine, the cartridges engaged by the hinged plate 25 being in registry with the opening 14 into the barrel. The door 17 is then closed. After the 1 oo first series of cartridges has been discharged the pressure of spring 32 tends to urge the upper end of the clip element 22 into position registering with the opening into the barrel, and when the proper cord 30 is 105 pulled to lower the follower which has just advanced the string of cartridges upward, the member 22 swings into registry with the opening 14 and the second string of cartridges may then be fired. no £2
