- 1What I claim as my invention is:1. A tapered pole consisting of four tapered channel sections each tapered in its web or flat, two of said sections constituting 05 sides of the pole while the two other sections have their webs or flats placed back to back and their flanges secured to the flat of the side members or elements.
- 2A tapered metal pole consisting of two ioo tapered, flanged side members and a tapered middle member having longitudinal flanges on its outer edges, said middle member spacing said side members apart and securing them together, each of said tapered, flanged 105 members consisting of divisions of a longitudinally divided section of flanged bar having its web or flat cut on a bias, the por- Q 1,470,174 tions of said parts made from the web or flat being secured together between· flanges ;to produce the taper.
- 3A tapered metal pole having two ta5 pered, flanged side members each consisting of parts of a longitudinally divided section of channel bar, the web of which is cut on a bias and with the web portions of the divisions reversed and secured together to pro10 dnce a tapered channel member and a tapered middle member having longitudinal flanges on its outer edges, said middle member spacing said side members, apart and having the flanges at its opposite .edges se15 cured against the web portion of · said compound, flanged, side members.
- 4A tapered metal pole consisting, of:a middle member made up of two tapered, channel sections arranged back to back, and two tapered channel-shaped side members the webs or flats of which are seated against and secured respectively to the flanges at the. opposite edges of said compound, tapered middle.member.
- 5A tapered metal pole consisting of a 25 middle member made up of two tapered channel sections and side, members each consisting of a flanged section tapered from end to end and made up of two flanged strips secured together at their bias cut 30 edge, each said compound side member having its web or flat secured against the flanges of both of the two. tapered, channel sections constituting the middle member at one side thereof. 39 Signed at New. Application filed April 22, 1920. Serial No. 375,657.
To dll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Maubice Lachman, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York 5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Poles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to the con10 struction of tapered metal poles such as telegraph, telephone or other transmission line poles.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of these poles and particu15 larly of such poles as require practically the same strength from all sides.
To these ends I employ a minimum number of parts to construct the pole as a whole and provide a rolled tapered metal section 20 having side flanges for each part or member.
In the preferred form of the invention all the parts employed in the structure are duplicates of each other and each is a tapered channel section constructed from standard 25 rolled metal shapes. In this way the pole may be shipped “knock-down” and by nesting the parts small space is required for storage or shipping.
The invention consists in the construction 30 of metal pole hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a tapered metal pole constructed in accordance with this invention. 35 Fig. 2 is another side elevation of the. same—taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1'.
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-section taken on the line 3—3 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the members or units..
Fig. 5 is a transverse cross-section through the same.
In the preferred embodiment of the in45 vention the pole proper comprises a middle member and two side members, one on each side of and secured to the middle member. These members are preferably made up of but four duplicate parts or units and each 50 part or unit is formed from rolled channel shaped sections of any desired standard size.
Each part is tapered from end to end and consists of two longitudinally divided lengths of metal 1,2 (see Figs. 4 and 5) each 55 having a flange 3. The lengths are secured together along the joint 4 by spot welding, riveting or otherwise. These parts are formed as shown and described in my prior application filed March 22nd, 1920, Serial so No. 367,739 by taking a rolled section or sections of flanged bars and separating the web by a bias cut, then reversing the relation of the parts and securing them together thereby forming a tapered flanged length of 65 metal.
To form the middle member 5 of the pole I preferably take two of these tapered channel sections and arrange them back to back, riveting them together if desired. If pre- 70 ferred this middle member may be constructed from an I-beam section.
Each side section 6, 7 is seated against the flanges 3 of the middle member and secured thereto in any desired way, riveting pre- 75 ferred. The middle member 5 is preferably arranged down the center of the side members 6 and 7 so that in cross-section the pole forms an H.
If desired the side members 6 and 7 may 80 also be formed from an I-beam section instead of a channel in which case there will be a double flange at each longitudinal edge of the pole. Also if desired to lighten the pole or for ornamental purposes parts of the 85 webs of the members may be removed according to any desired design.
By following this invention a tapered pole having any desired spread of base as well as equal strength from all sides may be con- so structed in the most economical manner.
