Safety holder for mine squibs and detonators

. Be it known that I, Joseph W. Davis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansted, in the county of Fayette and State of 6 West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Safety Holder for Mine Squibs ancl Detonators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a safety holder 10 for mine squibs and detonators, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a holder in which explosives of the kind mentioned can be carried safely and in quantities without danger of being permaturely ex15 ploclecl by electric currents in the mines or danger of becoming moist and thus rendered inefficient and dangerous to handle.

It is the practice among- miners generally to carry detonators and squibs loosely in the ²θ pocket, they sometimes being wrapped in paper so as to protect them to a certain extent from moisture. This practice is extremely dangerous, however, because the explosives are readily discharged by electric ²⁵ currents such as found in mines and the explosives are also likely to become moist so as to cause misfiring and often serious accidents.

It is an object of the present invention to ³⁰ provide a holder which will insulate the explosives therein so that they cannot be exploded by electric currents, the holder also serving to keep moisture away from the explosives.

³⁵ A further object is to provide a holder in which a number of squibs and detonators can be placed and safely carried.

With the foregoing and other objects in . view which will appear as the description ^4& proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, 45 changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the base and 2 designates the lid or cover of the holder. These parts are preferably substantially duplicates 60 of each other, one of them being provided near its edges with a continuous groove 3 while the other is provided near its edges with a continuous rib 4 so that when the cover is in position on the base or body the 65 groove 3 will receive the rib 4 and thus seal the holder. Obviously the cover is connected to the holder preferably by hinges as shown at δ. Formed within the base or body 1 is a 70 longitudinal recess 6 for holding squibs, this recess extending partly across the base from front to back thereof. In the space between the recess 6 and the front edge of the base is provided a longitudinal series of parallel 75 recesses 7 each designed to hold a detonator. Any number of these recesses may be provided. Correspondingly arranged recesses 8 ancl 9 are formed in the cover 2 so that when the cover is closed the recess 8 will register 80 with the recess 6 and the recesses 9 will register with the corresponding recesses 7.

The base 1 and the cover 2 are preferably formed of hard rubber or any other suitable insulating material. A spring catch 10 can 85 be secured to the cover 2 and may engage a lug 11 on the base so as to hold the cover in closed position.

By providing a holder such as described explosives of the kind mentioned can be han- 00 died safely, there being no danger of premature discharge thereof clue to contact with charged electric wires. Furthermore the explosives are protected from moisture.
