Application filed June 27, 1921. Serial No. 480.608.
To dll whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, George E. Scruby, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and 5 State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers made of paper or pasteboard for boxes made of 10 similar material. In my application for patent filed June 24, 1921, I have shown a pasteboard box of novel construction and of general octagonal shape, and the primary object of my present invention is to provide 15 a suitable cover for boxes of this kind. The box shown in said application is made from a single folded blank and it is possible to ship a large number of blanks in a flat condition.
The cover herein shown is also made from a single flat blank, but the blank is. bent into shape and certain parts are secured together so that the cover may be quickly opened and held in usable condition before it is 25 shipped. In order to accomplish these objects the blank is scored and slit to provide a central octagonal top or body portion and eight side portions, four of the side portions being recessed between their opposite ends 30 to facijiate the bending of the sides without distorting them when the top or cover is flattened for transportation.
In the accompanying, drawings:—
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box 35 with, the cover embodying my improvements applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cover looking at the inside thereof when in open condition ready for use.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cover folded and flattened for transportation.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the scored, recessed and slit blank from which the cover is made.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the blank partially bent into shape.
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing the steps of bending portions of the blank.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a portion 50 of the cover showing how certain parts are overlapped and secured.
Figure 8 is a view on an enlarged scale partly in section and partly in bottom plan showing certain details of construction.
The cover A is shown applied to a box B 55 of octagonal form, but while the box and the cover are polygonal they are not necessarily octagonal.
As shown in Figure 2, the top or body a of the cover is surrounded by side sections 60 which form the rim of the cover. The sections are of the same size, each alternate sections being of double thickness. The intervening sections of single thickness are recessed as shown at x for a purpose, herein- 65 after described. Figure 2 shows the cover ready for use. Figure 3 shows the cover in its folded condition suitable for shipment. The cover may be readily changed from the condition shown in Figfire 2 to that shown 70 m Figure 3 as will be hereinafter explained and this may be done without breaking or distorting the material.
The blank shown in Figure 4 is creased or scored at a' to form a central body portion 75 or top a. There are four rim forming flaps C which extend from the body of the blank radially outwards. These four flaps or sections 0 are formed by the slits c and the outer end of each flap is cut away at the so opposite corners at d. Each flap is scored at c- so that the outer part of the flap may be doubled oyer upon the inner portion to thus increase its thickness and strength and also to provide means for holding adjacent 85 portions of the blank in place.
Intermediate the flaps or sections C are four other flaps or sections D which are separated from the flaps C by the slits c and the flaps D are scored at d on lines per- 90 pendicular to the creases a' and extend from the joints of these lines outwards. Intermediate its opposite ends, each section D is recessed as indicated at x. This is an important feature of the invention and its pur- 95 pose is to facilitate in bending the blank while it is being folded to the condition shown in Figure 2 without breaking or distorting the material.
The blank shown in Figure 4 is perfectly 100 flat and it may if desired be shipped in this condition, but for the convenience of the user I or for retail use, the blank is preferably bent into shape and secured and flattened to the I condition shown in Figure 3, which is also 10J practically flat. It is obvious that the blank I shown, in Figure 3 may be quickly bent into I condition for use as shown in Figure 2. I a
1,401,683 and other side portions intermediate those 56 first mentioned, each side portion folding with the bottom portion on a fold line which is at an obtuse angle to the fold line on which the adjacent side portion folds with the bottom portion.
2. A box cover made from a single piece of material, having a body portion, side portions formed with wings and which are recessed between the wings, and other side portions intermediate those first mentioned 55 which are doubled oyer upon themselves and upon the wings and which are secured to the wings.
3. A blank for box covers comprising a single piece of material having an angular 70 central portion, a plurality of side portions formed with wings and which are deeply recessed between, the wings and are creased diagonally from their inner edges to the inner portions of the recesses, and other side 75 portions intermediate those first mentioned, each side portion folding with the bottom portion on a fold line which is at an obtuse angle to the fold line on which the adjacent side portion folds with the bottom portion. 80
4. A box cover made from a single piece of material, having a polygonal central portion, side portions formed with wings and which are recessed between the wings, and other side portions intermediate those first men- 85 tioned which are formed in two sections doubled upon themselves and which are secured at opposite ends to the wings.
5. A box cover flattened and ready for shipment made from a single piece of ma- 00 tenal having an angular body portion, side portions formed with wings and which are recessed between the wings, and other side portions intermediate those first mentioned which are doubled over upon themselves and 05 upon the wings and secured at opposite ends to the wings, said doubled over side portions being bent bodily over flatwise upon the body portion of the cover, and the remaining side portions having the wings and 100 the opposite end portions bent over upon the central portion of the cover while the middle portions of said recessed members are turned outwards.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 105 subscribed my name.
GEORGE E. SCRUB Y.
la order to bend the parts of the blank into shape and to properly secure them, I proceed m the manner indicated in Figures 5,6 and 7. The first operation is to bend the 8. four sections D on the lines a? and to bend the wings Dz inward as indicated in Figure 5. Then the sections C are turned from the position shown at 1 in Figure 6 to the position shown at 2 in the same figure. Then the outer parts o8 of the sections C are turned over upon the wings Dz and upon the lower portions c* as indicated at 3 and 4 in Figure 6 and then the parts are stapled, cemented, or otherwise secured as indicated at
F in Figure 7. When these operations are completed the blank will appear as shown in Figure 2 ready for use, but in such condition the covers would occupy considerable space and in order to avoid this, the blanks 20 are bent to assume the condition shown in
Figure 3. In thus bending the blank, each section C is turned over upon the middle portion of the blank and a portion of each section D at opposite ends thereof is bent 28 over upon the interior of the blank while the middle portion of each section P is turned outwards and flattened. It will be observed that when this operation takes place, each part D is bent upon the lines d'. The 30 parts above or outside the lines d' are the parts that are bent inwards upon the blank while the parts contained within the lines a' and d' are bent outward. In making these bends, the corners y at opposite ends of the 35 recesses x approach each other as indicated in Figure 3. This operation could not be performed if the parts D were not recessed in the manner before described and it will thus be seen that these recesses perform a 40 very important function. The recesses are preferably semicirciilar, but not necessarily so, it being important that a portion of each flap or section D should be bent outwards, namely, the middle portion, and that por45 tions at opposite ends of each section should be bent inwards.
