IMPROVEMENT IN EAR-MUFFS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,168, dated December 2,1873; application filed

August 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Sigmond Goge, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Ear-Muffs, of which the following is a specification:

Muffs have been made for covering the ears and protecting them from cold, such muffs usually having a wire frame surrounding the ear; but they obstruct the passage of sound to the ears, as well as being only adapted to ears of about one size. In some instances there have been holes made through the central portion of the muff to admit sound.

My invention is made for adapting the muffs to different sizes of ears, and for admitting sound freely at the front edges of the muff, between that and the cheek, so that the sound, especially in conversation, will reach the ear in the usual direction.

In the drawing, Figure 1 represents the two ear-muff's connected by an elastic, the side next the person being shown; and Fig. 2 is a view of the front edge of one of the ear-muffs.

The material employed may be of any desired character; but I prefer to use a section of pasteboard, of a size and shape to sit behind and above the ear, and cover the same with velveteen or other woven fabric. This is

The exterior portion b of the muff may be of fur, lined; and it is of a size large enough to cover the ear, and the parts a and b are united near their edges, and connected by an elastic, d. In consequence of the portion a of the ear-muff going above and at the back of the ear only, the muff at the front portion is open, as at e, and that part projects from the cheek or side of the face sufficiently for sound to pass easily into the ear. At the same time the ear is kept warm at the back and upper portions, that are ordinarily liable to injury from cold.

I do not claim an ear-muff in which the inner section extends toward the front at the bottom, so as to include the lower end of the ear. This prevents the muff being easily applied to ears of different sizes.
