To all whom it may concern :
. Be it known that I, Jesse A. B. Smith, a citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and 5 State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
I his invention relates to tally-strip niech10 anism, and is in the nature of an improvement upon the patent to F. A. Hart. No. 1,281,160, dated October 8, 1918.
Instead of feeding the tally-strip anil carbon-strip from the same roll as in said pat15 ent, separate rolls are provided, the two strips being wound on a common receiving roll after passing around the platen.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herein, the tally-strip delivery roll is 20 provided, at each end with a disk having a beveled friction edge, which is yicldably engaged by a suitable friction brake-member, provision being made of a imiiiually-operable member for withdrawing both of said 25 friction members simultaneously to ineffective position, so as to enable the tally-strip to be drawn forward by the hands without subjecting it to. great strain.
Provision may be made of a knurled head 80 connected with the receiving roll, so that the roll may be easily manipulated to wind or unwind strips.
The carbon-strip delivery roll may be supported in the tally-strip device by providing 35 at one end a revoluble member or head having a split tubular portion of suitable resiliency to insert in the hollow end of a core on which the carbon-sheet is wound, and a pin passing through a slot in a plate at one 40 side of the tally-strip mechanism, said slot having an open end to facilitate removal of the pin and the carbon-strip roll from the machine. On the outer side of the slotted plate or member, provision may be made 45 of a spring device supported on the pin and - pressing against the outer side of the slotted plate, so as to exert a braking action on the carbon-strip delivery roll.
The supporting member at the other end 50· of the carbon-strip tube may have teeth to enter notches in the core of the carbonstrip roll to prevent relative turning therebetween, and a. handle may be connected to this member for use in rewinding said car55 bon-strip. The pin at this side of the tally1921. Serial No. 464,612.
strip device may be retained in an open slot in the adjacent supporting member by a suitable latching member.
In practice, the carbon-strip and the tallystrip are passed around the platen and se- 60 cured to the common receiving roll and a work-sheet is passed around the platen outside of the carbon-strip. When typing of one line has been completed, line-spacing of the platen is effected in the usual manner. 65 and by suitable means the action of the line space mechanism is transmitted to the common receiving roll to draw the carbon-strip and tally-strip forward to a new position for typing. When the typing is completed. 70 the last writing on the tally-strip is at a considerable distance from the receiving roll, and the tally-strip must be advanced to bring the last written line thereon to a position adjacent the common receiving roll, in 75 order to allow the tally-strip to be severed by drawing the same against a fixed knife, which is mounted in the usual position just below the receiving roll.
This advance of the last writing line. 80 on the tally-strip may be effected by operating the line-space mechanism until the last line of writing has advanced the desired distance, or, since the method just described involves the taking of considerable time, the 86 tally-strip may be grasped by the hands and pulled upward. The second method is very expeditious, but puts considerable strain on the tally-strip when the friction brake devices are positioned to resist the same. In 90 order to obviate such strain during tire drawing forward of the tally-strip, the friction members are withdrawn to ineffective position by manually operated means.
Before severing the used portion of the 95 tally-strip, the portions of the tally-strip and carbon-strip carried by the receiving roll must be removed therefrom. The carbon-strip is then rewound until its leading edge is drawn back of the knife. This en- 100 ables a portion of the carbon-strip to be used repeatedly until it becomes unfit for use. When this condition is reached, the used portion of the carbon-strip is severed and a new portion brought into use. 105
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear. >

1,448,601 platen-frame of an Underwood standard i typewriter. . .
” Figure 2 is a front view, partly in section, of a portion of the tally-strip device showin··- the tallv-strip roll and tho braxe device therefor, and also the carbon-strip roll, a section being taken along the axis oi xe latter and parts broken away sufficiently to show the means whereby the ends thereof are supported. . .
Figure 3 is a detailed view shov, mg a knurled head, attached to the shaft of the common receiving roll. ...,, ,.,1.,, Figure 4 is a plan view, showing the biakt devices for the tally-strip roll and the means for releasing them simultaneously.
A platen 10 is mounted on an axle or shaft- 11. journaled in the ends 12 oi a platen-frame 13. The platen-frame 13 also comprises a. rear paper-table 14 o &U1 work-sheets between the platen 10 and the usual feed-rolls 15, whereby the work-sheets may be advanced to the printing line at- the front of the platen, to enable typing to be effected thereon by a type 16 carried by a movable type-bar 17 sinking through a ribbon 18· , , ,- , n,,
Provision may also be made of a tallv strip mechanism, which may be bv brackets 19 fixed on the ends 12 ot the platen-frame 13. Extending between said brackets 19 are a shaft 20 and a rod 21, which serve to support plates or brackets 99 and 23 at the left and right of the talhstrip mechanism. The structure so tar described is in general sumilar to that disclosed in said patent, No 1.281.161
The tally-strip A is placed m the machine. in the form of a roll 24 wound on a core or tube 25, which may also be referred to as a roll. The core 25 is loosely, mounted on the rod 21 and too rapid unwinding ot the tallv-strip is prevented by means ot disks ‘>6 with beveled friction edges, secured to the core 25. and brake arms 2!) having suitably shaped ends 30 in engagement with the 1 leveled edges of disks 26. The arms 29 are pivoted on a rod 31 secured by any suitable means, such as screws 32. to the plates 22 ami 23, and are yieldablv pressed towards the disks 26 by means of springs 33 having their free ends engagmg the arms 29. and their other ends secured to collars 34 on rod 31. the collars being ad; iustablv held in position on said rod 31 bv suitable means, such as set-screws 3i>.
Provision is also made of a carbon-strip B wound upon a hollow core or roll 3b. which is supported at its left-hand end by a member 37 romprising a split-expanding tube or head 38. projecting into the end oi the core or roll 36 and secured by suitable devices 39 to the enlarged head of a pm in ,.χ-i..iirlino- fliromdi an open slot 11 in the

SO serted between the enlarged head of pm 40 and the plate 22 to properly position the pin, and also to serve as a spool-head fol the core 36, on which the carbon-strip is wound. At its outer end, the pin 40 is provided with a reduced threaded portion 4<>, on which is mounted a nut 44 having a tubular portion adapted to enter the open end of a sleeve or hollow cylinder 45, and to compress a spring 46 between the nut 44 and a shoulder 47 formed in said sleeve 4a.
This spring pressure will urge the sleeve 45 and the disk 42 toward each other, so as to press the same against the opposite fares of plate 22 to resist the turning of the member 37, and, consequently, of the core 36 The pressure of the parts on plate 22 will tend to prevent withdrawal of the pin 40 from the open end of the slot 41, and such pressure may be adjusted by turning «5 the nut 44 on the portion 43. .
At its other end, the core. 36 is earned by a member 48 provided with a split-expanding tube or head 49 similar to head 38 and' inserted in the end of the core. 36. 90 The member 48 is also provided, with a pin 40 extending through a slot 41 in the plate 23 and having fixed thereon a. disk .>0 similar to disk 42.' On the outer side of plate 23, the pin 40 is provided with a collar 51 to be 95 engaged bv a latch 52 pivoted at 53 on the plate 23, and having a projection extending inwardly from its lowest end which may engage in either one of two depressions 54, so as to hold the latch either m the. full- 100 line position, shown in Figure 1, with a concave portion thereof fitting over the col lar 51 or in the dot-and-dash line position in which the collar 51 is released to enable the pin to be withdrawn from the open slot 41 in the plate 23.
In case the core 36 is to be removed from the machine, the latch 52 will be moved to ineffective position, and the sleeve 45, shown at the left in Figure 2, drawn outwardly to relieve the pressure on the outer surface ot plate 22. The core 36 and the supporting members 37 and 48 may then be withdrawn from the tally-strip mechanism the splitexpanding tubes or heads 38 and 4.) with- ° drawn from the old core 36 and inserted in the open ends of another core haying a carbon-strip wound thereon, and the assembled parts placed in the machine by moving the pins 40 into the slots 41, the sleeve 45 being pressed outwardly at this time. Upon moving the pins to the bottoms of the slots 41. the latch 52 may be shifted to the full-line position, shown in Figure 1, to secure the right-hand pin and member 48 in position. ,
Relative rotation between the core 3() and the member 48 may be prevented by pro- idino' the latter with projections 55 engagJWfe b,IIL’ **· “ in °*

core. In order to turn the core 36 by means of the member 48, a handle 57 may be secured to the right-hand pin 40 by suitable means, such as a screw 58.
The tally-strip A and carbon-strip B may be passed around the platen and outside of a rod 58“ to a receiving roll 59 having a slot 60 in which the ends of the two strips are inserted, the rod 58® serving to deflect the strips A and B sufficiently to prevent engagement with the shaft 20. A work-sheet ! is then inserted, but guided by the rear paper-table 14, between the feed-rolls 15 and the platen 10, and moved upwardly to position it properly with respect to the printing point. Typing may then be effected on the work-sheet C and the corresponding carbon copy produced on the tallystrip A.
When a line of typing has been completed, a line-space lever (not shown) may be actuated to move a slide 61, which, by means of a pawl 62 thereon, will turn a ratchet-wheel 63 and line-space the platen 10. The actuating movement of the slide 61 will actuate a link 64 pivoted at 65 to an arm 66, and thereby actuate the latter to cause a pawl 67 to actuate a ratchet 68 on the shaft 20, the pawl 67 being yieldably held in engagement with the ratchet 68 by means of a spring 69. This line-space actuation of shaft 20 will be transmitted by gears 70 thereon to a gear 71 secured to the roll 59, and cause the latter to draw the tally-strip and carbon-strip forward one line-space. The line-space mechanism is, in general, the same as that disclosed in said Patent No. 1,281,160.
When the work is completed, the last line typed on the tally-strip is at a considerable distance from the usual severing knife 72, which is located close to the receiving roll. The tally-strip A and the carbon-strip B are then unrolled from the receiving roll 59, preferably by means of a knurled head 73 secured to the roll, and the carbon-strip B rewound by means of the handle 57 until the leading edge thereof is drawn past the knife. A finger-piece 74 is then depressed to swing about rod 31, a bail comprising two arms 75, connected by a bar 76, and pins 77 extending under the brake-arms 29. This will release the tally-strip roll to enable the tally-strip to be drawn upward by the hands of the operator until the last line typed thereon is above the knife 72. The tallystrip may then be severed, and a fresh portion thereof advanced with the leading end of the carbon-strip to the receiving roll 59 and connected therewith by inserting the leading ends of the two strips in the slot 60. The finger-piece 74 may then be restored to its normal position, and a new piece of work started. The leading portion of the carbonstrip can, therefore, be used over and over until it becomes too much worn, and may then be severed from the rest or the strip, and a fresh portion brought into use.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the 70 improvements may be used without others.
