To dll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Christopher W. Bauer, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county 5 of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cordage Hitching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to cordage hitch10 ing or fastening devices, the term cordage being used in its broad general sense, as covering and including ropes, cords, twine, strings, wire, and other flexible strips or ligatures, for various utilities, as for tem15 porarily uniting or tying the ends of such . cordage for connective or binding purposes, etc.,—the invention consisting in the specific arrangement and configuration of parts described and claimed in a unitary structure, 20 substantially as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, I have exemplified a practical embodiment of the essential features of my cordage hitching device on a scale and thickness adapted for 25 use in connection with rope or heavy cord, with the understanding that I do not limit myself in this respect, since the device may be made of different sizes, and thicknesses, in accordance with the various requirements 30 and exigencies of use to which it is to be applied, as for instance, smaller and thinner for use as a string or twine coupling for commercial purposes, or bigger and thicker for use in conjunction with ropes of larger sizes.
With this understanding,
Fig. 1, is a side elevation of my coupling or hitch plate;
Fig. 2, is a like view showing a slight modification in the form thereof;
Fig. 3, is an edge view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow 3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, is a section taken upon plane of line 4—4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device as 45 connected with a heavy cord or rope, and preparatory to the hitching of the latter;
Fig. 6, is a similar view showing the bight wind of the cord or rope;
Fig. 7, is a top view of the parts shown in 50 Fig. 6. ,
My coupling plate C, is preferably metallic, especially for use in conjunction with ropes and coarse cording where strength is essential, although for lighter utilities, as 55 for employment with binding cord, twine, etc., other material may be used in its formation. It is preferably flat, or substantially so. and formed with the initial eyelet holes <?, e', through which the preliminary threading of the cordage &, is effected, and 60 with a primary bight recess δ, in substantial alignment with said initial eyelet holes e,e'. A secondary bight recess b' is formed on . the opposite side of the plate C, for receiving the cordage k, from said primary bight 65 recess b; and intermediate between the eyelet hole ¢, and said secondary bight recess b', is a groove -r, into which a bight of the cordage k, may be wedged as indicated more particularly in Fig. 6, of the drawings. 70 Similar. V slots v', v2, are formed on the opposite side of the plate C, below the eyelet e', and the . primary bight recess δ, and function in like manner to pinch a bight of the cordage k, forced therein. 75
In the modification shown in Fig. 2,’ the eyelet e', is formed with an entrance ex, to facilitate the insertion of the cordage; and in other ways the construction may be modified'as to detail, without departing from the 80 spirit and intent of my invention in this respect. .
Furthermore the opposed edges of the V slots v, ν', v2, may be made concavo-convex as indicated in Fig. 4,—i. e., one edge 85 being formed with a concavity v2, and the / opposed edge being formed with a convex surface c4, so as to more effectually grasp . the cross section of cordage introduced and forced into the groove. 90
Thus constructed my coupling plate C, affords adequate and convenient means whereby the ends of cordage may be tautly secured as related to each other, or slack taken up and compensated for,—the device . 95 being obviously adapted to an infinite variety of uses and purposes, too numerous to mention specifically in detail,—the essential feature of the invention consisting in a coupling plate of the character des- 100 ignated formed with eyelets, bight recesses, . and pinch grooves, substantially in the manner set forth.
My device is reversible in the sense that it is adapted for use by either right handed 105 or left handed persons; and in order attain / the best practical results is preferably / wound in opposite directions as indicated in the drawings.
