Be it known that I, Andrew Wells, a subject of Great Britain, residing at East Akron, in the county of Summit and State of 5 Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Golf Bags, of which the following is a description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to golf bags used to carry golf clubs and the objects of the invention are to provide a golf bag for carrying golf clubs, and also for carrying at the same time, golf shoes, clothes and the like so that the same can be easily packed and unpacked without removing the golf clubs or injuring the same in any manner.

To the accomplishment of the above objects and to. such others as may hereinafter 20 appear the invention comprises a golf bag having an open bottom communicating with an inner bag closed by means of a cover on the bottom of said golf bag. The invention further comprises means for securing said 25 inner bag in said golf bag so as to make the same removable.

I will now proceed to describe my invention .with reference to the accompanying drawings and will then point out the novel 30 features in claims:

. Figure 1 is a side view of a golf bag made m accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2—2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a top view.

. Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing a ball pocket provided in the top of the inner bag.

In the drawings 1 designates the body of 40 my improved golf bag made of canvas, leather or other suitable material, and provided in the present instance with suitable stiffening members 2. The top of the bag is, in the present instance, secured to a metal’ 45 ring 3 by means of a strip of leather or other suitable material 4 held in position by means of suitable lacing 5.

The bottom of the body of the bag is, in the present instance, secured to a cylindrical 50 band 6 made of leather or other suitable material. A suitable flanged cover 7 made of leather or other suitable material is provided for closing the bottom of the bag, the upper edge of the cover being arranged to engage 55 the lower edge of a collar 8 secured to the cylindrical band 6 as clearly shown in the drawings.

In the present instance the cover 7 is hinged at one side to the bottom of the ba&lt;* by means of a hinge 9 one end of which is 60 secured to the collar 8 while the other end is secured to the flanged portion of the cover. On the side of the bottom of the bag opposite the hinge 9 is secured one portion of a lock 10, the other portion of the lock being 65 secured to the flanged portion of the cover as clearly shown in the drawings.

The bag is also provided with a suitable handle 11 and shoulder strap 12 for carrying τ ^b!f’ ' . 70

In the present instance the interior of the bag is provided with a central pocket or inner bag 13 made of canvas or other suitable material.

The bottom of the inner bag 13 is preferably 75 made substantially the width of the inner diameter of the outer bag and is provided with a metal ring 14.

The top of the inner bag 13 preferably does .not extend, to the top of the outer bag 80 and is less in diameter than the outer bag, the inner bag being preferably tapered from the bottom upward as shown in Figure 2. The top of the inner bag, in the present instance, is. provided with a flanged cover 15, 85 suitable links 16, in the present instance four m number, being secured at suitable intervals to the flanged portion of the cover 15. Corresponding links 17 are also secured to the top of the inner edge of the outer bag 90 and these links are connected by means of suitable straps 18 which hold the top of the inner bag in position as shown in Figure 2.

From the above description it will be seen that golf clubs, similar to the club 19, can 95 be inserted in the outer golf bag around the inner sides thereof, the same being held m this position by means of the inner bag 13, the straps 18 acting to separate different clubs to prevent crowding. 100

From the above description it will also be seen that the bottom cover 7 can be unlocked and opened to permit of golf shoes, golf clothes, and the like being inserted, and the cover .7 closed and locked, without interfer- 105 mg with the golf clubs inserted in the top of the bag as before described.

The removal of the shoes, etc. from the inner bag by opening the bottom cover is a very simple operation compared with trying lie £2

1,408,323 to remove similar articles from an ordinary golf bag where the clubs, shoes, etc. are all insertea into the top of the bag.

The provision of the inner bag 13 for 5 golf shoes, clothing and the like effectively separates these articles from the clubs, and prevents the sharp nails of the golf shoes from scratching the clubs. The inner bag 13 also prevents golf shoes and the like being 10 crowded into one side of the bag. so as to bend the shafts of the golf clubs all out of shape.

As the ends of the shafts of the golf clubs take up very little room around the inner 15 edge of the bottom of the bag the bottom of the inner bag can be made comparatively wide so as to afford a large opening for the insertion of the golf shoes and the like.

The top of the inner bag is preferably 20 made smaller than the bottom so as to afford ample room for inserting the golf clubs and the tapered construction insures the easy removal of shoes and the like from the inner bag when the bottom cover is opened.

The inner bag is very useful for carrying a rubber rain coat or the like as these coats are ordinarily very easily torn, but if the same is inserted in the inner bag it is out of the way and cannot be injured by inserting 30 and removing the clubs from the bag in playing. _

If desired the inner bag can easily be removed by unfastening the straps 18 and pulling the same out leaving the bag to be 35 used as an ordinary golf bag.

If for any reason the player does not care to use the outer bag, which is often the case when the player has to carry his own clubs, the inner bag can be removed and used for 40. this purpose, the inner bag being much lighter and more easily carried than the heavy outer bag.

By referring to Figure 4 it will be seen that the upper end of the inner bag has been 45 provided with a partition 20 the top of the inner bag being provided with a removable cover 21 so as to provide a small pocket for golf balls 22.

While the invention has been described 50 with particular reference to the details of construction the same is not to be considered as limited thereto as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the following claims.
