The shaft 27 at its outer end,is provided . clalk the block 6 and plate 14 to with a crank arm 28 and handle 29, whereby . A h machine is ready, for the post 24 can be rotated through the me-. the ,-basc . diuni of said gears and shaft 2(. I he shaft 10 '10 has a collar 30- which is rigidly secured thereto and forms the abutment for one face of the saw 11 and a nut 31 screwed onto the threaded end 32 of the shaft 10, serves to securely bind the saw to the collar 30.
The opposite end of the shaft has a ui in» pullev 33 secured thereto which is rotatable by a belt 34. This belt has its upper run 35 engaged by a take-up roller or pulley 36, the latter being rotatable on an aim riwhich is pivotally mounted oir a bracket 08 secured to the base 2. by. a bolt ?9. The aim 37 is acted upon by a coiled spring 40 whicl, in the present instance, is connected with the standard 1. The function of this roller 36 is to take up slack which occur» due. to vertical adjustment of the saw - carrying shaft 10 as will hereinafter be more fully explained. . , ·
The base 2, adjacent to its upper portion, has two extensions 41 and 42. These extensions at their lower ends are provided with bosses 43 and 44 respectively. These bosses •ire provided with threaded openings 4o, either of which can be engaged by a threacl· ( ed rod 46 which is secured to a hand lever 47 and is designed to protect through a segmental slot 48 in depending portions 49 ol supporting arms 50 for the work table ol. These arms 50 have holes 52 . therein de40 signed to be engaged by pivot pins o3 which are secured within the upper portions of the extensions 41 and. 42, the axes of these pivot pins 53 being in a different vertical plane from the axes of the threaded open45 mgs 45 above referred to, thus permitting the table 51 to tilt or turn on the pivot pins 53 without greatly changing the relative position, with respect to the saw, of an opening 54 in a block 55 through which the saw 50 extends (see Fig. 3). \ ,
This block 55 is readily removable from the, table proper and rests upon ledges 56 formed within said table top so that the. top ok the block 55 is substantially flush with the top 55 of the table 51. ....,. i
In operation, when it is desired to change the position of the saw with respect to the top of the work table 51, the handle 18 is loosened to relieve the binding action be60 tween the plate 14 and the block 6. lhe shaft 27 is then rotated through the medium of the handle 29, and since the post 24 cannot move vertically, the effect of the screwthreads on the post and the internal screw; Jt will be. noted, that-according-to.the arrangement of the belt illustrated, if the sav. 75 is lowered, the spring 40 will serve .to/pull the take-up roller downwardly and thereby take-up'·any slack-in the run 3o of the belt. On the other hand, if the saw is moved/ upwardly, the spring 40 will yield-in propor- 80 tion to the upward movement and thereby prevent undue strain on the belt. _
When it is desired to tilt the table, the hand lever 47 can be readily loosened and after the-table top has-been rocked on the 8d pivot pins 53, the hand lever 47 can be again tightened to secure the table m the adjusted P I preferably provide fingers 57 at the extreme top of‘the base 2 which act as addi- 90 tional supports for the table when the latter is in a horizontal position and which also act as; stops to permit the return of the table to a horizontal position. -.
I provide a rail 55“ on the top of the work 95 table 51 and provide this rail with two longitudinally slotted arms 56“. _ Clamping bolts 57“ are designed, to extend through the table 51 and through the slots within the arms 56“ so that the rail 55 may be moved 100. toward or from the saw 11.
In Figs.· 6 to 8 inclusive, I have shown a form of my invention which can be made extremely small and is well: adapted for household use, manual training schools, or 10.5 other places where a. serviceable little machine is desired. In this form of my invention, I eliminate the means for raising and lowering the circular saw such for-exsimple as the elements including the post 24, 110 wears 25, 26, and handle 29.
Referring to Figs. 6, 7, and 8, 58irepresents a base which provides a vertical slideway 59 for a block 60, and a plate 61, said block and plate being provided with flanges 115 62 and 63 which respectively embrace opposite faces of the base 58. The plate 61 has a stud: 64 of similar construction to the stud 16 above described, and said stud; 64 extends through the block. 60 and; at its outer thread- 1?« ed encl is provided with a wing nut 65 which serves to bind the plate 61 and block 60 to the base 58. . v. ,
The block 60 has. an extension 66 which forms a bearing for a shaft 67, .said shaft 12» having a collar 68 thereon against which abuts a circular saw 69. A. nut 70 ismoimted on the threaded end 71 of the shaft 67
1,3^4-136 and is designed to clamp the saw against the -collar 68. The opposite end of the shaft A7 is provided with a pulley 72. A work table 7-3 has arms 74 which are designed to rock 5 upon pivot pins 75 which project frουι opposite extensions 76 and 77 of thebase 58.
A_ threaded stud 79-is mounted in the extension. 77 and has a wing nut 80 thereon which is designed to frictionally engage a 10 depending portion 81 of one of the supporting arms i4. Fingers 82 extend from the ^orward face of the base 58 and form limiting means for the work table 73. The table to is provided with an opening 83 through 15 which tne saw 69 extends as shown in Fio· 8
A guiding rail 84 is designed to slide on the upper face of the work table 73 toward and from the saw 69. This rail has bolts bo which extend therethrough and which engaging one outer side 20 ride within slots 86 formed within said table adjacent the slidewnv® adjacent opposite ends thereof. flano-e. .to«toto to lhe rail 84 acts as a guide for the edge of the material to be sawed. I preferably 9 - A SCrT the plate 61. and
2a block 60, and while this screw forms a loose connection between the block 60 and the plate .61, it serves to prevent undesirable jamming between said plate and block, so to f nut.65 is turned, the plate 61 and block 60 will move smoothly toward or irom each other.
In this form of my invention, the saw 69 can be adjusted vertically by hand after the 7iniSAUt 65. has been loosened, and the 3a table 73 can be turned on the pivot pins 75 by loosening the wing nut 80 and can be secured m a tilted position by tightening on said wing nut 80. . .
While I have described my invention as 40 taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not , _ “ιη,7 myself to the precise construction set 4d forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended Claims.
