To dll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis Arkin, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk 5 and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to separable fasteners of the general type comprising comple10 mental stud and socket members commonly used as fastening means for garments, gloves, automobile curtains and like purposes. The fasteners of this general type heretofore provided, other than those of the 15 so-called “sew-on” type, are for the most part adapted and intended to be permanently secured to the material with the result that they are very difficult of removal when, as not infrequently happens, it be20 comes necessary or desirable to remove the fastener or change its position upon the material. Furthermore, special tools and appliances are required for affixing these fasteners to the material and such tools and 25 appliances are not commonly possessed by, or readily available to, many persons who have occasion to affix fasteners to material.
It is the object of this invention to provide fastener members of this general class SO which can be secured to the material without the employment of special tools or appliances and which can be readily removed from the material when such removal becomes for any reason necessary or desirable, 35 thus providing a fastener adapted for general use by all classes of users.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate certain embodiments of the invention,—
Figure 1 is a side view of a socket mem40 her with its retaining plate embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the socket member shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the re45 taining plate shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, partly in elevation, of the members shown in Figs. 1 and 3 secured to material;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the fas50 tener members shown in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a side view of a stud member with its retaining plate embodying the invention ;
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the fas55 tener member shown in Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section partly in elevation of the fastener member shown in Fig. 6 showing the parts affixed to material; and
Fig. 9 is a bottom plan view of the fas- 60 tener member shown in Fig. 8.
The fastener member shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive is of usual contour and comprises a dome or casing A and a base plate A' having the usual stud - receiving opening. 65 While I prefer the particular socket member shown having the stud-retaining and releasing means within the casing A shown in my copending application for patent Ser. No. 176,820, it will be understood that the 70 particular stud - retaining and releasing means within the casing are not essential to the present invention and that the socket . may be provided with any desired stud-retaining means. 75
The base plate A' is provided with a downwardly extending annular skirt A2 which surrounds the stud-receiving opening and is preferably formed integral with said plate. Said skirt has at its bottom edge a 80 plurality of upwardly turned ears A3 oppositely disposed as shown and forming an elongated locking head.
B is the socket holding plate adapted to be disposed upon the opposite side of the 85 material from the socket member proper. It is provided with a central elongated opening B' preferably of oval contour through which the skirt A2 with its locking head formed by the ears A3 can freely pass when 90 in one position only So that when said skirt A2 is passed through said holding plate the parts can be locked by relative rotary movement thereof as presently to be described. At the side of said opening B' the plate B 95 is provided with oppositely disposed slots B2 adapted to retain the edges of the ears A3.
In securing the socket member to material, the member proper and the retaining plate B are disposed on opposite sides of the material and the skirt A2 with its ears A3 is passed through the material into and completely through the opening B' of the plate B. The socket and plate are then relatively rotated 90° from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in -Figs. 4 and 5, whereupon the ears A3 forming the locking head are moved to a position transverse of the opening B' so that the parts are locked and yieldingly held in locked relation by entrance of the edges of the ears A3 into the slots B2.
1,284,038
To remove the socket member, the member proper and its retaining plate B are pressed toward each other until the edges of the ears A3 leave the slots B2, permitting relative ro5 tation of the plate and socket member to a position 90° from locked position, the skirt A2 with its locking head being then free to pass out of the opening B'.
Referring now to the stud member shown 10 in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, the stud S is of usual contour and construction and has the usual flange S'. The portion of the stud below the flange S' is provided with a flattened elongated locking head S2 formed integral· 15 with said stud and preferably provided on its top face with a pair of oppositely disposed sockets C.
The stud holding plate P, which is adapted to be disposed upon the side of the ma20 terial opposite to the stud S, has a central elongated opening P' preferably of the shape shown, through which the locking head S2 of the stud can pass in one position only, so that when said head S2 is 25 passed through said plate the parts can be locked by relative rotary movement thereof. Preferably said plate P has a pair of oppositely disposed projections or bosses D which cooperate with the sockets C provided 30 in the locking head S2.
In securing the stud member to material the stud S and retaining plate P are disposed on opposite sides of the material and the locking head S2 is passed into and com35 pletely through the opening P' of the holding plate. The stud and plate are then relatively rotated 90° from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9, whereupon the locking head is moved 40 to a position transverse of the opening P' so that the parts are locked and yieldingly held in locked relation by entrance of the projections D into the sockets C.
To remove the stud member, the stud S 45 ano its retaining plate P are pressed toward each other until the projections D are free to leave their sockets C permittino· relative rotation of the stud and plate to a position 90°. from locking position, where50 upon the locking head S2 is free to pass out of the retaining plate.
Preferably the socket retaining plate B is provided with an annular ridge B3 of substantially the height of the ears A3 when in 55 locked position as shown in Fig. 4 so that the bottom of said retaining plate presents a substantially smooth surface. The said retaining plate P has a similar flange P2.
It will, I believe, be clear that a fastener 60 member made in accordance with my invention as above described can be readily affixed to material by persons without experience in the particular work, and without the employment of special tools. It will 65 also be apparent that the fastener can be readily removed from the material as occasion may require.
