Wrapper.

Be it known that I, Sidney S. Grotta, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and 5 State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a wrapper for wrapping articles of various kinds, more 10 particularly candy, gum and other objects.

In the case of gum, single sticks are wrapped up in tin foil, and then are covered with a tube of paper formed from a sheet. This cover reaches closely to the ends of the gum, 15 in order that the package shall appear attractive.

A number of these sticks are then wrapped Jup in a package by means of a second sheet formed into a. tube, this outer sheet holding 20 the several single sticks together in one package, and thus covering the. inner. sticks close to their ends. It is difficult to remove one of the sticks from such a package, and it is also difficult to remove the 25 single stick from the single package, without tearing the outer cover.

The object of this invention is to provide a wrapper for a single stick or article, so as to enable that article to be removed from 30 its cover or tube readily. It also has for its object the removing of single sticks from a package of wrapped sticks, or articles. I carry this out by means of the following devices:—

Figure 1 shows a wrapper laid out flat for a single article. Figs. 2 and 3 show edge and top views respectively, of an article wrapped with the wrapper of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 shows a sheet for wrapping a series 40 of articles. Figs. 5 and 6 show edge and top views, respectively, of a series of articles wrapped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, when the sheet is made into a tube..

Fig. 7 shows the package of iFig. 5 with 45 one of the articles slid endwise partly from the package.

Fig. 8 shows the manner of removing a stick from the package of Fig. 6.

Fig. 9 shows an edge view of the article 50 of Fig. 2, partly removed from its wrapper.

Fig. 10 shows a view of Fig. 9, and the manner in which the article is removed from its wrapper.

It is desirable that the package on its top 55 side, as shown in Fig. 3, where a single article is wrapped, and also on its top side as shown in Fig. 6, where a series of articles are wrapped, should cover as much of the article as possible. For that reason the outer * wrapper is kept equal to the full length, or 60 nearly to the full length of the inclosed article.

shows the wrapper laid out flat, and having two notches 13 and 14, and two flaps 15 and 16. The wrapper 12 is wrapped 65 around the article 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The wrapper is this instance, is a little shorter than the article to be wrapped, although the wrapper may be equal to the length of the article, which in some.instances 70 may be preferred.

The wrapper 12 is so folded around the article that the notches 13 and 14 are disposed at the edges of the article 18, so that the flap portion 16 projects beyond the bot- 75 tom 19 of the notches, and thus serves to cover over the article 18 on top and bottom close to its end, but leaving an exposed portion 20—20 at each edge of the article 18.

By seizing the edge of the wrapper of a 80 single stick by fingers 21—21, as shown in Fig. 10, and also seizing article 18 by the fingers 22—22, at the exposed portions 20 of the article, the latter may be readily slid endwise out of the tube 12. 85 represents an outer wrapper, being notched at 26—27, and having intermediate flaps 28 and 29. This wrapper 25 is wrapped around a series of articles, as for example five wrapped articles 18, as shown in Figs. 90 5 and 6, the outer wrapper being formed into a tube and pasted together so as to hold these articles together.

The flap portions 28, 29, are placed over the top and bottom of the package, shown 95 in Fig. 6, and the notched portions. 26—27 come opposite to each other, thus exposing the edges of the articles 18, wrapped in their wrappers 12.

The wrapped articles of Fig. 2 are placed 100 in the outer tube with their notched exposed edges 20 beneath the left hand end 30 of the wrapper 2.5 of Fig. 5, so that these notched edges of the single articles, are not exposed. The opposite covered edges 32 105 of the single articles of Figs. 2 and 3 are, however, exposed when wrapped in the tube of Figs. 5 and 8.

The object of this arrangement is to enable one single article with its wrapper to 110 be removed from the package of Figs. 5 and 6, without pulling the article itself out of

1,275,004 its own wrapper, which would be the case if the notched edges of both covers were placed at the same end of the package.

Fig. 7 shows one wrapped article 18 with its tube being removed from the package of five wrapped articles, and this is accomplished by grasping the whole package by the fingers 35 and 36, and then grasping the exposed edge 32, 32 of one of the articles by means of the fingers 37 and 38.
