Spoon-holder.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known, that I, Caroline Graham, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Chester, in the county of Chester and _B State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SpoonHolders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an improved form of holder for spoons or other utensils. One object of my invention is to provide a holder of the above described type which can be quickly and easily attached to a dish, and which will be of such construction as to effectively hold a spoon or other utensil and prevent it from sliding bodily into the dish.

Another object is to so construct my improved holder that it may be used either to support the handle of the spoon or to di20 rectly support the bowl of the spoon.

A further object is to so make my improved holder that it can be manufactured quickly and at a low cost.

These objects, and other advantageous 25 cuds which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which—

Referring to the drawings, the holder 1 is made of a single piece of wire bent into the form illustrated and providing two rear 4& recesses 2 and 3, two intermediate recesses 4 and 5, and a forward recess 6, the said forward recess 6 extending transversely to the recesses 2, 3, 4, and 5.

The recesses 4, 5, and 6, are open at the -50 top, and the recesses 2 and 3 are open at the bottom. The recesses 2 and 3 permit the holder to be slid over the upper edge 7 of a dish, and the free ends 8 of the wire forming the holder depend and extend down55 wardly on the outer surface of the dish, and the folds 9 and 10 which provide the rePatented Aug. 31,1917.

cesses 4 and 5, extend downwardly on the inside of the dish.

The upper portions of the recesses 4 and 5 are shaped as at 11 to receive the flanged 60 edge 7 of the dish, since dishes are usually provided with a flange or bead at their upper edge.

The extreme inner portion of the holder 12 is looped, and this loop forms the recess 65 6 above referred to, the bottom portion of the loop 12 acting to support the handle of the spoon in a manner clearly shown in Figs. 2, and 4.

The recesses 4 and 5 which are formed by 70 the depending loops or folds 9, provide means whereby the bowl of the spoon may be supported as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, so that with my improved invention, the spoon may be supported in an 75 inclined position as shown in Fig. 2 with its bowl portion resting on the bottom of the dish or if it is desired to keep the spoon entirely out of the material in the dish, the bowl may be inserted within the recesses 4 80 and 5, and rest on the bottom of the folds 9.

While the holder may be manually moved along the edge 7, it cannot accidentally come off, since the ends 8 and folds 9 are designed to frictionally engage the inner and outer 85 surfaces of the dish. The extreme ends of the wire forming the holder are bent into loops 13, and these loops 13 act both as a reinforcement for the ends 8 and also act to prevent any sharp edges from cutting 90 or scratching the hand of the user.

In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4, the legs 14 and 15 assist in forming the recesses 4 and 5, and are of greater length than the corresponding legs shown 95 in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, and since the loop 12 is formed by continuation of the wire from the legs 14 and 15, and is much shorter than the legs 14 and 15, the handle of the spoon when resting within the recess 6 pro- 100 vided by said loop 12, will be raised a considerable distance from the upper edge 7 of the dish. This form is especially desirable for use on dishes or pans which must necessarily be extremely hot, and in which the 105 material- within the dish is also hot.

It will thus be noted that with this construction, the spoon is kept relatively cool by being kept entirely free of the dish.

My invention may be made from a single 110 piece of wire bent into the shape illustrated, and it acts in two capacities, namely, to a

1,237,504 directly support the handle of the spoon, or to support the bowl thereof.

While I have described the dish as having a flange, it will be noted that my holder may 5 be used on dishes or other vessels in which the flange is omitted, since the recesses 2 and' 3^: are capable- of receiving a side of a dish which may be straight or otherwise formed. Also, while I have described and 10 illustrated my invention as a spoon holder, it will be noted that it may be used in connection with, a fork, or ether utensil if de. sired.

The; recesses 6 may be of such width as to 15 permit the narrow portion of the handle sliding therethrough, but prevent the wide portion of the spoon handle from sliding therethrough..

While I have described my invention as 20 taking, a- particular form, it will be understood. that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from, the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set 25 forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claim.
