Be it known that I. William Evans Joseph, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hemlock, in the county of Perry and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. · „ ,

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses and more particularly to what will be hereinafter known as a reversible mattress, the main object of the present invention being the provision of 15 a mattress of this character which, is formed of two separable sections, whereby either of the sections may be reversed independent of the other so that should the head or foot portion of one of the sections become de20 pressed, it can be quickly and readily reversed, without interfering with the position of the opposite section.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above char25 acter which will possess advantages in points of efficiency.-and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction' and operation.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features 'of construction, .combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the 35 specification and claim.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention: and 40 Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through two connected sections.

Referring more particularly to the . drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the two mattress sections, each section being formed substan45 tially alike and of the same size and width. Each section is provided upon each end thereof with the spaced buckles 3 which are adapted to be engaged by the ends of the straps 4. Each side- of each section is pro50 vided with two horizontal series of loops, indicated at 5 and 5'. The series 5 is arranged above the series 5', the two series considered as entireties being parallel to each other. As disclosed in Fig. 2, the loops

-are so arranged on opposite sides of the sec- 55 tions that when two sections are mated, the loops of the one will lie between the loops of the other whereby the straps 4 may be woven through these two upper series and the two lower series at the meeting termi- 60 nals of the sections. The ends of the upper strap 4 are secured to one section, while the ends of the lower strap are secured to the other section, as disclosed in Fig. 1.

The sections 1 and 2 are each provided 65 upon their ends with handles 6 which are in the form of suitable straps, the ends of which are sewed or otherwise secured to the upper edge of the mattress, said handles being preferably formed of material which 70 can be readily folded in place against the mattress sections, so as not to be in the way when the mattress is in use. The loops 5 and 5' which are arranged upon the sides of the mattress are formed by having a 7 5 strip of material extending longitudinally across the side edges of the mattress sections and the ends thereof secured by sewing or other suitable means to the binding of the sections, while the central portion there- 80 of is secured to the central portion of the edge of the mattress, whereby to form two separate loops arranged one above the other to receive the retaining straps 4. From this it will be apparent that the straps 4 may be 85 quickly and readily inserted within the loops δ and 5' or removed therefrom.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a 90 simple and durable mattress formed of one or more sections, whereby each of the sections may be quickly and readily reversed without interfering with any of the remaining, sections and securely fastened in its op- 95 erative .positions without being reversed. It will be understood that these sections are preferably formed of the same size and ma terial and are of simple construction, so that they can be manufactured and placed 100 upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details 105 of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing £». 1,154,776 any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
