To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Minnie E. Silverthorn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cayuga, in the county of Sargent and 5 State of North Dakota, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such⁴ as will enable others 10 skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to handles adapted for attachment to various type of fabric articles, and more particularly a handle for 15 attachment to mattresses for facilitating the moving or turning thereof.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a handle as specified, which includes a bail or handle member, a pair of ba®?· 2α plates and a resilient wire, bent to assum substantially a U-shape and having needle or inserting points formed upon the ends of its legs thereof, for insertion through the fabric of the mattress covering, for attach25 ing the handle to the body, and further tb provide receiving sockets in one of said base plates for. receiving the inserting end of said needle.

With the foregoing and other objects in 30. view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several· views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved handle, showing the same applied to a fragment of a mattress. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the handle, showing parts thereof in section, and Fig. 3 is a cross sec45 tional view through the handle on the line 3—3/ of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates a mattress or similar article, which has a fabric covering. The ham 50 die structure indicated at 2, includes a pair of metallic plates 3 and 4, which have their facing edges spaced from each other, as is clearly shown in the drawing. The plate 3 has its marginal edges rolled upon them55 selves for clamping engagement with the apex of a U-shaped member 5, which is con structed of resilient wire or metal, and has inserting points 6 formed upon the ends of its legs 7 and. 8, for facilitating the insertion of the legs through the fabric covering of 60 the mattress 1. The plate 4 has its marginal side edges bent ^zto form receiving sockets, indicated at 9// and 10, which are bulged outwardly as is indicated at 11, for receiving the enlarged inserting end 6 of the 65 needles 7 and '8.' The marginal end edge of the plate 4 is rolled upon itself for securing a rod 12 to the under surface-of the plate, which rod is bent substantially equi-distant of its end to form a loop or U-shaped section 70 13, through-which the'end 14 of the bail or handle wire 15 passes. The end 14 of the bail wire 15 extends along the upper surface of the plate 4 to the inner edge of the same, w^? 'ire it is bent upon itself as at 15, and ex- 75 tes As along the under surface of the plate 4) as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, for connecting the wire 15 to the plate 4. The bail wire 15 is bent to form a handle supporting section 16, upon which is mount- 80 ed an ordinary cylindrical handle 17. The end 18 of the bail wire 15, is bent downwardly, and coiled upon itself about a hump 19 formed on the apex of the wire 5. The plates 3 and 4 are cut away, to permit of the 85 extension of the hump or loop sections 13 and 19 outwardly therethrough.

In attaching the improved handle, to a mattress or the like, the needles 7 and 8 are sprung inwardly, as is indicated in dotted 90 lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and outwardly out of the sockets 9 and 10, after which they are inserted through the fabric covering of the mattress as is indicated in Fig. 1,. and they are again sprung for seat- 95 ing into the sockets 9 and 10, which securely connects the handle to the mattress, for facilitating the turning or moving of the mattress.

In reducing the invention to practice cer- 100 tain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is i°5 claimed.
