Be it known that I, Cuno Jacobs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chancellor, in the county of Turner and 5 State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Helmets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in. what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical, light 15 and efficient helmets for the protection of chauffeurs, aviators, sand-blast operators and others.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional view of a helmet in accordance with 20 my invention on the head of a wearer illustrated by dotted lines, the plane of the section being indicated by dotted line 1—1 in ¹ the next described figure; Fig. .2, a front elevation of the helmet on the wearer, and 25 Fig. 3, a plan view of the head-gripping frame of said helmet.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates a bowed strip of spring-steel preferably tapered in opposite directions 30 from approximately the middle thereof and secured to the broadest portion of the strip is an upwardly projecting member 5 of a snap-button. The bow 4 extends from front to rear over the head of the wearer of 33 the helmet, and riveted or otherwise suitably fastened to the ends of said bow are bowed spring-steel head-clamp strips 6 and 7. The clamp 6 is designed to fit the forehead, and the clamp 7 is designed to fit the occiput 40 of the wearer of the helmet. In practice the inner faces of said clamps may be faced with cloth or rubber material if found necessary or desirable for comfort. The assembled members aforesaid constitute a 45 head-gripping frame.

Riveted or otherwise fastened to the front of the bow 4 is an inclined stiff steel strip 8 and hinged to the forward lower end of the same is an elliptical band 9, this band 50 being preferably of aluminum for lightness. The band is provided with an inturned outer flange 10, and an out-turned inner flange 11. ’ Set in the band against its flange 10 is a pane 12 of transparent material, ®5 preferably celluloid, and opposing the pane is a flanged spacing ellipse 13, against which

another pane 14, of material similar to the one aforesaid, is set. Opposing the pane 14 is a stay ellipse 15 held in place by clips 16 swaged out of the flange 11 of the band 9. go The spacing and stay ellipses are preferably aluminum, and the setting of the panes in the band 9 is such that a dead-air space is formed between said panes to prevent frosting of the same when the helmet is in use. 65 Attached to the flange 11 of the band 9 are stay-strips 17, and each stay-strip is detachably engageable with a socket 18 with which the clamp 7 is provided.

Covering the head-gripping frame above 70 specified is a hood 19 of any suitable pliable material, and a snap-button section 20 with the crown of the hood engages the snapbutton section 5 with the crown-strip 4 of said frame. An elliptical opening in the 75 front of the hood registers with the glazed band 9 aforesaid, and below said opening said hood is slitted and fashioned to have a flap 21 that buttons over the remainder thereof, to close the slit, snap-buttons being 80 preferably employed.

Employed in connection with the front of the hood, approximately parallel to the closed slit of the same, are stiffening strips 22. Attached to the back of the hood are 85 preferably elastic bands 23 designed to extend under the armpits of the wearer of the helmet and button to the front of the said hood, snap-buttons being preferably employed. 90

Ventilators are set in the sides of the hood, and a stem 24 of a rotary adjustable member 25 of each ventilator is accessible outside of said hood. By manipulating the rotary member of a ventilator the area of 95 opening in the stationary member of said ventilator is regulated.

The organization of the helmet is such as to provide for ready separation of parts of the same to facilitate repair. 100

In matters of minor importance the details of the helmet may be varied from what is herein shown and described without departure from the scope of my invention as claimed. 105
