Polycrystalline diamond radial bearing

Summary by NHIP

Polycrystalline Diamond Radial Bearing

The radial bearing assembly features a polycrystalline diamond compact with a surface finish of at most 0.508 μm sliding against a metal surface. Thermally stable polycrystalline diamond supported by tungsten carbide may be arranged in equally spaced or staggered patterns on the rotor or stator component.

Abstract

A radial bearing assembly is provided. The radial bearing assembly includes polycrystalline diamond elements, each having an engagement surface in sliding engagement with an opposing engagement surface. The opposing engagement surface includes a diamond reactive material. The radial bearing assembly may be deployed in a variety of components and applications, including in rotor and stator assemblies. Also provided are methods of use of the radial bearing assembly, as well as methods of designing the radial bearing assembly.

  2. 25
A radial bearing assembly comprising:a first component, the first component comprising a polycrystalline diamond compact having a polycrystalline diamond bearing surface thereon with a surface finish of at most 0.508 μm;and a second component, the second component having a metal opposing bearing surface thereon, the opposing bearing surface comprising at least 2 wt. % of iron, cobalt, nickel, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, chromium, manganese, copper, titanium, or tantalum;wherein the polycrystalline diamond bearing surface is in sliding engagement with the opposing bearing surface.
  3. 28
A method comprising:providing a radial bearing assembly, the radial bearing assembly including a first component and a second component, wherein the first component comprises a polycrystalline diamond compact having a polycrystalline diamond radial bearing surface thereon with a surface finish of at most 0.508 μm, and wherein the second component comprises a diamond reactive material, wherein the diamond reactive material is a metal having a metal surface thereon;and coupling the first component and the second component such that the polycrystalline diamond radial bearing surface is in sliding engagement with the metal surface.
