Letters Patent No. 111,384, dated January 31,1871.

IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE SHELVES AND SUPPORTS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To dll whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Parley I). Boot, of Weston, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Shelf-Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide convenient aud suitable means for supportingportable shelves; and

It consists of a lock-joint consisting of two pieces of metal, one of which is attached to the shelf and the other to the wall οϊ to any suitable fixture, bracket, or .article· of furniture, One or more of said lock-joints being used for supporting the shelf, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawing—

Figure 1 represents a front view, showing the shelf in dotted lines;

Figure 2 is a top view of the joint; and

Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section of fig. 2, on the line» x.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This lock-joint or connection consists of two pieces, A and B.

The part A is attached to the wall, or to any fix ture or bracket, by means of screws, as indicated in the drawing, or in any suitable manner.

B is attached to the under side of the shelf so as to correspond with the part A.

C is a flange which projects from A at a right angle therewith; which is recessed out, as.seen in fig. 2, the recess being beveling or larger at the upper side, as indicated in dotted lines.

The part B is provided with tenons, D, .which are made to.fit into the recesses in C.

The shoulders E prevent the parts from being sep-, arated by drawing horizontally, and the beveled recesses and tenons prevent B from settling down below C. ..These lock-joints may be used not only at the ends of the shelf, but for supporting its middle and preventing sagging.

This improvement is adapted to shelves in almost every situation, and will be found cheap, simple, and effective for the purposes intended.
