To all ichom it may.concern:
Be it known that I, Joseph A. Carlier, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roslyn, in the county of Kittitas and State’ 5 of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Storage-Battery Cases, of xvhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 10 in storage cages or receptacles and has particular application to a receptacle or case for carrying the storage batteries of miners’ lamps in mines.
In carrying out the present invention, it 15 is my purpose to provide a case of the class described xvhich may be. readily attached to the belt of a miner and xvhereby the storage battery and fuses may be carried in a closed condition so that in the event of short cir20 cuiting of the miner’s lamp or the lead xvires from the battery to the lamp, the fuse will blow out xvithin the case and thereby elimi’ nate the possibility of explosions and the like incident to the sparks caused by the 25 bloxving out of the fuse.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the type set forth xvhich will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency- and durability, one xvhich may be manufactured 30 and marketed at a.minimum expense and one which will be of comparatively light xveight so that the same may be carried about with ease and facility.
With the above and other objects in view, 35 the· invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter Set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 40 is a viexv in elevation of a storage battery carrying case constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the case.
Referring now to the accompanying draw45 ing in detail, ihe numeral .1 designates a substantially Tectanguiar. case or receptacle constructed of sortie suitable material preferably metal and provided with a removabletop 2 . -hereby access may be had to the in50 terior of the case. Mounted within the receptacle 1 and resting upon the bottom wall thereof is a storage battery 3 of any desired construction, while depending from. the .cover 2 xvithin. the receptacle or case are 55 alining sockets 4, 4 designed to receive a fuse cartridge 5. Leading from the opposite poles of the storage battery and including the fuse cartridge 5 in series are the lead, xvires 6 terminating in a. socket 7 secured to the cover 2 approximately centrally thereof go and designed to receive a plug 8 from which latter leads the lamp cord 9 terminally connected to the miner’s lamp 10, the latter being usually carried upon the cap. Each fuse cartridge 5 is of the slow-burning type ¢5 in contradistinction to 'the blow-out type of fuse so that when the leads become short circuited, the fuse xvill melt and. so increase the resistance in the circuit whereby a too rapid discharge of the battery xvill be avoided and 70 arcing or sparking at the point where the short circuit takes place eliminated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection xvith the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing 75 mV invention xvill be readily apparent.
It xvill be seen that xvhen the plug 8 is inserted xvithin the socket 7 the circuit to the lamp 10 xvill be closed and such lamp illuminated. Should the lamp circuit be short cir- 80 cuited in any manner, the fuse 5 within the case 1 xvill burn out and thereby prevent sparks flying about-the niine.
The cover 2 is preferably hingedly connected to the receptacle 1 and held in closed 85 position through the medium of an appropriate form of lock 11. The key to the lock 11 is preferably carried by the mine superintendent or other person in authority so that when a fuse has blown out a miner will be 90 compelled to return to the surface or other safe place before the fuse can be replaced.
One side, wall of the case or receptacle 1 is preferably provided with alining eyes or loops, so that the· case may be readily fas- 95 tened upon· the miner’s belt.
