Letters Patent No. 104,652, dated June 21,1870.

IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FELT HATS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all persons to whom these presents may come :

Be it known that I, George H. Scribner, of Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention, having reference to tlie Manufacture of Hats, or various other articles composed· of felt or cloth; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described, as follows:

Figure 1,. of the accompanying drawing, representing a.bat as made iu accordance with my invention,

Figure 2 exhibiting a top view, and

Figure 3, a side elevation of the block used iu giving to the hat the ornamental or spotted surface inci-/ dent to such invention.

The said block, which is intended to fit to tlie internal surface of the hat-body, has, on its outer surface, a series of grooves, a a 1) 1), which are disposed so that some are in parallel, or about parallel, lines,· and cross the others similarly arranged, the whole being to form pyramidal frustums or projections, c, over the block. .

I do not confine my invention to such au arrangement of the grooves, as they may be otherwise disposed to make, or aid in making, the required figures or spots that it may be desirable to produce ou the hat-body. Instead of such grooves the block may be recessed on its surface.

After having blocked the body ou tbe block so made, a flat board or strip of wood, covered with sand-paper or an abrasive material, is to be rubbed over the outer surface of the hat-body, so as to wear it down directly over such parts of it that may be supported against any of the projections or spaces o between tlie grooves or. recesses of the block.

' Those parts of the hat body which may cover tlie grooves or recesses will sink into them, and not be worn away by tlie rasping or wearing material.

Instead of the flat board, covered with sand or emery-covered paper, the grinding or reducing material may be used on a moderately pliable article, such as paper or pasteboard, or, in place of such means of reducing the cloth, a grinding-stone or wheel, or a rasp or file may be used.

The bat, when completed, has a mottled surface or ornamental finish designed to suit the taste of many persons. , . '.

Before subjecting the bat-body to the action of the scored or recessed block and a grinding implement, as described, the outer surface of the hat-body may be dyed or colored a different color from the rest of the body, and this superficial color may be ground off over the parts c of the block, whereby spots of different color will be represented as bounded by the superficial color.
