Be it known that I, Bessie H. Smith, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 5 Illinois^-havtr invented hew and useful Improvements in Powder-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a face powder box of novel construction 10 which can be carried in a pocket or handbag without liability of the powder escaping therefrom and which is provided with a puff arranged to seal the perforations in the container when, not in use for applying the 15 powder to the face.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with the cover and puff removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the 20 cover with the puff in place therein. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the puff. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the box showing the cover and puff removed from the container. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional 25 view of the box with the cover in place thereon.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures, 6 designates the 30 cover and 7 the container of the box. The container comprises a lower section having a bottom 8, a peripheral,bead 9 adjacent to the bottom, and a flange 10 extending upward from the bead, and an upper section 35 comprising a top 11 having a downwardly extending peripheral flange 12. The flange 12 on the upper section is arranged to fit snugly within the flange 10 of the lower section and against the bottom 8 to hold the 40 powder 13 within the upper section and on the bottom 8. The top 11 has a plurality of perforations 14. The upper part of the flange 12 between the top 11 and the upper edge of the flange 10 is made with a screw45 thread by suitably stamping or bending/the flange to receive the threaded depending flange 15 of the cover 6. A powder puff 16 of suitable form and preferably provided with a backing 17 and handle 18 is arranged 50 to fit within the cover 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4- ...

In practice the container is filled with powder before the two sections are secured together, the upper section being placed top down on a flat surface and filled with» 55 powder. Then the bottom section is secured in position on the top section, the parts being preferably made so that when they are arranged in proper position they will be permanently secured together by frictional 60 engagement or by gluing or by crimping. While I prefer this construction of the box it is obvious that the two sections may be made to fit together tightly for ordinary purposes and yet be capable of separation 65 for refilling if desired. The cover with the puff arranged therein can be screwed down on the container sufficiently tight to compress the puff, as shown in Fig. 5, and thereby seal the perforations 14. 70

My invention provides a very neat and convenient face powder box which can be made in various sizes and particularly in a small size adapted to be carried in a lady’s pocket or handbag. When the cover is ap- 75 plied the puff will prevent the ponder from escaping through the perforations in the top of the container and hence there is no loss or scattering of the powder while the cover is in place. When it is desired to use the puff 80 the cover is removed from the container and the puff is removed from the cover and then sufficient powder is shaken from the container through the perforations on to the puff for the purpose desired. The puff may 85 be used while still remaining in the cover if preferred.

My invention provides a compact and convenient box for face powders which can be carried in a pocket or in a handbag without 90 liability of the powder escaping therefrom and with a puff arranged to confine the powder in the closed retainer and in position for removal and use.
